Where to go for a drink after work?

misterbishop69
By misterbishop69

I am an American and I will be in Qatar for roughly 3 weeks for work; I am a civilian engineer and will be working for the US Military over at Al Udeid Air Base.

I won't be staying in a hotel. Instead, I will be staying at a corporate apartment provided for me.

My question is this: Where can I go after work for a drink or two to relax and unwind? I am aware that Qatar has some strange laws, regulations and requirements regarding alcohol. Perhaps not as restrictive as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, but certainly more restrictive than many other countries.

I will only have my US passport for ID purposes. Is my US passport alone good enough to allow me to go to some bars in hotels, etc. to enjoy some beers after work?

Thank you very much, all of you, for any help/advice you can offer on my question.

Cheers!

Being a english man working on hospital roof for the next 5 weeks i Know how you feel misterbishop. Had a few nights out at the ramada as its about a 10 min walk from my digs and when youve worked from 5am to 2pm and then walked to the ramada you just dont care on the price and keep on drinking! But it does help when the company pick up the tab, well within reason they do any way.

There are no Ninjas in Doha... I think they congregate in Dammam, you know, cooler temperatures and all...LOL

Thank you for your uncalled for and wide off the mark, smugly paternal advice regarding posting where I work and what I do.

Perhaps in the paranoid-delusional world where you live in, robot ninjas are lurking around every corner waiting to kidnap you or skewer you with their finely-honed blades, but in the real world I assure you this is nothing but hogwash.

Try doubling-up on your meds. They're not working.

I just took a client to PF Changs here in LA, each Sam Adams bottle was $8.50, this was during lunch, I am impressed with the Doha price, think of how much energy is used to keep that beer cold... Phew thats what your paying for, well that and insanely high tariffs.

Misterbishop, 28QR is as cheap as you're going to find it for. Places like SkyView charge 50QR for a COKE only. $13.50 for a can of coke. It's absolutely absurd. Also, at Lava they charge 100QR for a Long Island. So your best bet is to get 3-4 drinks and plan on spending $30-40 per drinking session. Although, you will only have another 10 days to enjoy doing so.

ps. You should know better than to post as much information about where you work and what you do on a public site. I'm sure your company wouldn't like that..where were you for training?

I'm not going to be here long enough to get a license. Only here for about 3 weeks, and the processing time alone for residency permits is at a minimum 6 weeks.

Finally made it to Doha and have found the sports bar at Ramada to be pretty decent, apart from a few boring expats who have penchants for talking just to hear themselves talk.

QR 28 for tall pints of icy-cold Heineken, not a bad deal!

Thks for the advice, Xena.

At least I'll only be in the anti-alcohol "police state" for 3 weeks, and then it is off to the US East Coast where freedoms such as these are less restricted.

Onward then upward!

advertising buy booze at the base and taking it home.... its illegal here to be caught with alcohol WITHOUT a licence...

Unfortunately as said in most of the threads before, its really expensive to drink here... hence I do it when I go home and don't bother when I get back...

Its really depressing to pay QR40 (ZAR80) for a Smirnoff ice here knowing I only pay QR 10 back home:-(

Beer at Admiral's costs about 30 Riyals or slightly more than USD8 for a pint.

The Ramada has several bars including the Sherherazad which charges 24 Riyals per beer. They have the big screen TVs with mostly soccer and cricket showing - so if you're into baseball and American football you'll be out of luck. It's more of a tavern feel there.

At bubbles (in the New part of the Ramada), it's more loungy, the beer is the same price Ok if you want to sit in a comfy chair and relax - I understand it gets more active later in the evening (I usually go for a beer and a snack - try the deep fried prawns - excellent)

A lot of people go to the Harp at the Sheraton, I'm not fussy as their menu is limited and the beer is too expensive.

Hope that helps.

@ Colt45: Yep. I'm down in South Jakarta, just south of Pondok Indah... Technically in Tangerang. Oooohh yes. Malioboro in the Kota area of JKT. 100% off the hook!!

just a clarification, as per the calendar I have in the office (corporate calendar) actually by Aug 11 th (+/- 1-2 days) Ramadan has already started so that you will have to add that for planning.

No, I meant pints, not barrels. I can buy barrels where I'm at now. ;)

A couple of pints after work = around $30. That's not moderate! LOL

By flor1212• 14 Jul 2010 09:37
flor1212

means bottles. But it seems you are thinking of barrels! Lol! The best times is when you take it moderately! Who knows, your three weeks will be a very nice stay. A lot above is willing to guide you and maybe accompany you. ANd that would be DOUBLE the 12~15$ a pint, not a barrel! Lol!

By misterbishop69• 14 Jul 2010 09:28
misterbishop69

Oh well. I'll be a beer and wine guzzling maniac, then.

Perhaps I can trade drinks at Doha bars in exchange for me juggling various sharp objects in the bar for entertainment.

Plus, as I get drunker and drunker, I'll injure myself, thereby increasing the entertainment factor. Everyone wins.

By crnkshft• 14 Jul 2010 09:25

But who cares if the pints are 12-15 USD when they serve each one with that old Doha charm:)

You only get Beer and Wine at the base, no hard drinks. I am not 100 % sure about that though.

By misterbishop69• 14 Jul 2010 09:21
misterbishop69

Colt45, I think you're onto the only solution. I'll just have to buy some hooch on-base from the general store and drive back to the casa with it.

Doh! OK then, no bars for me! And I was feeling ripped off here in Indonesia with $5 pints at the local... Yeesh!

By Colt45• 14 Jul 2010 09:18

like gkramer said, sometimes it's BEST to get your own booze, stay home, crank up the stereo and get shiet-faced ;-)

@ Olive: I will be leaving on 17 August, right around the start of Rahmadan. Thanks for the suggestion re: Carlton!

@ Colt45: Yes, we do have bars and clubs on our base -- but after work, if I drink there on-base and then drive home to Doha, then I'll be violating a very strict drunk driving law, right? ;)

@ Yashi2010: Point taken, and thks!

@ sebichanmjose & bondowen: Thks for your advice!

If, caught driving in the influence of alcohol, the penalty is QR.50,000/- with an extended prison term

for 1 year.

So be careful. Don't drive if you are drunk.

All the Five Star Hotels here have bars ... And if you

are a white, they won't stop you at the door. Perhaps, will ask for your passport.

It really depends on your taste....

If you go to Paloma at Intercon...you'll have a live band playing at times.....mostly it is Spanish.....

If you go to Bubbles in Ramada Plaza.....there will be someone playing the piano....

There are many more bars....

Dunes at Grand Hyatt, Admirals at Ritz, Bubbles, Sherzad, Orion at Ramada, Irish Harp at Sheraton, Peral lounge at Mariott, M Lounge at Merweb

Thanks, Rizks, for the helpful information! Do you have a specific recommendation? Perhaps you've visited some bars there in Doha and know of some of the better ones.

I will be sure to bring my US passport -- I do not and will not have a Qatari ID card.

Cheers!
