response from QLers'

Instead seeking our opinion, clearly referring to a nationality is NOT a correct approach..

To be more professionally, he should have discussed with his colleagues to ensure 'use of common language' in the office especially when in presence of clients.

We all know regarding effective communication and office ethics :)

it is a general trend with all languages......similarly I have seen South African, Sri Lankans, Arabs, Keralites, Mangalorians, many more, who feels more comfortable while discussing in their own languages.

From disciplinary PoV; it is NOT courteous to speak in any foreign language when in a group and well aware that few would not understand, one could avoid vernacular language.

nomansland, You talked about QL. We use Urdu only in Pakistan and Urdu Groups. This is in line with QL guidelines. Please familiarize yourself with the rules and guidelines before you hit your keyboard.

We, Pakistanis are good with languages including Urdu, English and Arabic. To surprise you, most of the Pakistanis (I am one of them) you see around are not native speakers of Urdu, but you will find them speaking better Urdu than you, though you claim to be a native speaker of Urdu.

yeah, one should try to keep the conversations in english when in a meeting with the clients..

if that isolated discussion between your two colleagues was for just a few seconds...its ok as this may have been done just to clarify his own doubt before presenting it to the client..

By LeBaNeSeMaN• 16 Mar 2010 19:57
LeBaNeSeMaN

If the Client doesnot know english then you should address him in his mother language if possible.

As for me, when I am in official meetings and if I were asked/requsted in Arabic I will reply in english so that all the attendants will understand.

Nothing else Fragile we are a team of europen , indians & pakistanis we are in a conference room & giving presentation to the clients in between a client have raised a doubt & one of my pakistani friend started discussing that issue with his pakistani collegue in urdu & I Felt really weird

If you are with friends ok u can speak with your own language but infront of 15-20 members(clients) in the conference hall if u start discussing issue in own language ,will it not effect the image of the company

I am an ardent proponent of promotion of Urdu language. However, I think we should speak English if the official language at workplace is English. Where there are no rules in regards to the office language, one may use the language he/she is more comfortable with, which obviously is the mother tongue.

I never speak English with any Pakistani who I know can communicate in Urdu. Nonetheless, I never speak in Urdu with a friend or a colleague when a third person is present whose language is not Urdu.

I know wot u r saying... even the Inglish do the same... they will only speak read and write in Inglish even though we r in Arab speaking reading and writing country!!!

By Pachy Pachy• 16 Mar 2010 11:32
Pachy Pachy

the answer to your question is....

1.why do an englishman speak english??

2. why do philipino's speak tagalog??

3. why do a spanish guy speak spanish?

They speak because they are comfortable speaking it. And so are the Pakistani's or for anyone that matter. Not that they do know any other languages.

I know many pakistani friends thou they speak URDU well they do speak English well too and at work!!

Honestly speaking....your question seems to be stupid! U should have not wasted 2 -3 minutes that you took to post this on QL. Should have smoked a Cigar..would have been better.

Good day Super Hero!!

if those ppl are speaking urdu to the non-urdu speaking clients ,which is highly unlikely, than it is a problem, but, if they are speaking in urdu to urdu speaking clients then they are doing exactly what is expected from them, making their clients feel comfortable.
