By anthoworx

Just wandering around in QL.. came across many forums and group.. all talking about.. Aussies in Qatar, Indian in Qatar, Filipinos in Qatar..

Was wondering why no group saying "Human In Qatar" or is it everyone is happy identiyfying themself with their nation and not by being a Human ???

thanks for the detailed explanantion.. it really enhanced my knowledge.. by the way is it your thoughts...

By anonymous• 13 Dec 2009 12:19

anthoworx,

the tendency to form groups in humans and animals stems from inherent sense of fear and insecurity...they want to stay in groups to be protected..

human beings are social in nature and want to interact with others... thus groups.

human beings are also reactionary in nature and feel uncomfortable in unfamiliar environments...thus they tend to mingle in familiar surroundings..

if you lock 100 people in a room for 100 days, you would find some groups shaping up right from the first day..and finally freezing in a few weeks..

sociology refers to such situations..and theories.

human beings if stranded would possibly group themselves when in a forest inhabited by all animals as during that situation it would serve the above interest.

First of all, what is your problem if somebody will start a discussion about nationality in others nation? Are you offended? are you disturbed? They raised it just for discussion, if you are not interested, just ignore it.

Of course, filipino in qatar, indian in qatar, british in qatar and the likes... why dont you understand? The logic is nationality in other nation.. do you get it? if you want human to be dicussed, then mention EARTH then it will come as HUMAN ON EARTH.

Every body wants to describe other nations other than their origin.

it is nonsense if you wil say filipino in philippines!

azilana - THANK YOU!! I thought my family (extended family) was just.. well, a bit hickish. My parents are surprisingly educated and accepting of all my shenanigans. I finally sent the aunts some pictures of women not wearing the niqab and being beaten by their husbands (yes, it was a concern that this would happen in the street!) and it was decided that maybe I'm not as batty as previously thought.

Next lesson: it's pronounced "Qatar" and not "Guitar"!

When I came to Qatar last Feb 2005, my parents didn't know. After 1 week, I called my mom and told her I am already in Qatar.

She replied frantically saying "I told you not to go to Saudi Arabia. It's dangerous there!!!" I fell out of my chair(for real) laughing. It took me almost 1 year to explain where I am. Good thing was, Qatar was the site for the 2006 Asian Games...that really helped.

By Khawaga• 12 Dec 2009 17:22

britexpat - I'm embarrassed to admit this, but my aunt asked me if Qatar was in the Saudi Arab Emirates. I explained that Qatar was a country NEAR the UNITED Arab Emirates and that Doha was its capital. She then asked me what was the difference between the Saudi Arab Emirates and the United Arab Emirates. I explained that the Saudi Arab Emirates is a country that doesn't exist...

Khawaga,

You can help bridge the gap!

mdobraz,

you have very valid points (been reading your views on 911 btw).

I believe we need to invest on people communicating to each other which is not to an acceptable level yet- far from it even.

This is why the media is so powerful to maneuver the public and get them to believe & support whatever they fabricate. Iraq war is a perfect example. Many Iraqis & Americans (who were innocent) died based on a pack of lies.

We need to do a better job, people to people.

Interesting. I haven't been to Saudi Arabia, so I don't know. But are their own people taking over the... how do I say... the sort of "menial" manual labor-type jobs as well? Or do those still go to foreign labor?

By britexpat• 12 Dec 2009 16:04

My question was why there is no group or forum topic "Human in Qatar"

By Khawaga• 12 Dec 2009 16:00
Khawaga

As I understand it, the foreign work force is in place because the local workforce is unable or unwilling to do those jobs. Do you see an effort to change that? I'm not trying to be snarky here, I'm honestly curious.

By britexpat• 12 Dec 2009 15:49

I don't believe that the Arabs see themselves as being over run.

The governments are trying to build the infrastructure and economy of the country using readily available foreign labour.

As and when their own people can begin to do these jobs, they will be replaced.

It is a long term plan which is bearing fruit. One cannot equate it to Mexico and USA.

By Khawaga• 12 Dec 2009 15:42

I guess it's because I, too, come from a country of immigrants, but I don't see the problem with a polyglot country devoid of any unique "culture" or "nationalism." Seems to me to be little more than a guidelines to designate between "us" and "them." I mean, we're not France! :o)
