Al Sadd, who walloped Al Sailiya 5-1, continued to top the table with six points while Al Ahli, who are also undefeated so far, are second with inferior goal difference. Al Rayyan are third with four points.
Below are the highlights and results:
Al Sailiya 1 vs Al Sadd 5
Date: Monday, September 7, 2020
Venue: Education City Stadium
Al Sadd continued their winning run as they beat Al Sailiya 5-1 in Week 2 of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League at the Education City Stadium on Monday.
Hassan Al Haydous (seventh minute), Santi Cazorla (30th-minute penalty), Baghdad Bounedjah (59th minute), Nam Tae-Hee (82nd minute) and substitute Ahmed Bader Sayyar (88th minute) scored the goals for Al Sadd, who moved on to six points. Captain Majdi Siddiq gave Al Sailiya’s sole reply in the 41st minute. Incidentally, it was by the same scoreline that Al Sadd had beaten Al Kharaitiyat in their opening match.
New recruit Cazorla continued to shine for Al Sadd as he scored once and gave assists for two goals. Al Sailiya, who had held Al Rayyan to a 1-1 draw in their first game, remained on one point. The Peregrines had reinforced their squad ahead of the 2020-21 season and were expected to give Al Sadd a stiff challenge, but found themselves at the receiving end.
Al Sadd braced well for their campaign in the 2020 AFC Champions League, which will resume on 14th September with all West Zone matches being scheduled in Doha, in fine fashion.
Al Kharaitiyat 2 vs Qatar SC 1
Date: Monday, September 7, 2020
Venue: Al Gharafa Stadium
Promoted Al Kharaitiyat beat Qatar SC 2-1 in Week 2 of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League at the Al Gharafa Stadium on Monday. Mohammed Osman (20th-minute penalty) scored for Al Kharaitiyat, who were helped by an own goal by Qatar SC’s Kayke Rodriguez in the 50th minute.
Elmehdi Barrahma scored Qatar SC’s goal in the 75th minute. In the process, Al Kharaitiyat, coached by Yousef Adam, made up for their 1-5 loss to Al Sadd in their opener, while Qatar SC crashed to their second defeat, having earlier lost 0-2 to Al Gharafa.
Al Kharaitiyat had finished at the bottom in the 2018-19 season and were relegated. However, they got back to the First Division by emerging as winners in this season’s Second Division.
Al Gharafa 1 vs Al Rayyan 3
Date: Monday, September 7, 2020
Venue: Al Gharafa Stadium
Al Rayyan tasted their first victory in the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League by defeating Al Gharafa 3-1 in Week 2 at the Al Gharafa Stadium on Monday. Johan Boli and Yacine Brahimi were the scorers and heroes of Al Rayyan, who had dropped two points after being held to a 1-1 draw by Al Sailiya in their opener.
Boli scored in the 25th and 71st minutes, and Brahimi’s goal came very late in the match (90+3). Jonathan Kodjia scored Al Gharafa’s goal in the 90th minute.
The encounter between last season’s top-two teams, the heavyweight clash of Week 2 featuring two clubs with rich history as well as tradition besides many titles and honors to their credit, was fought keenly. Al Gharafa had more of the ball (55 percent), while Al Rayyan created more opportunities and understandably had the last laugh.
Al Gharafa had finished a creditable fourth in the 2019-20 season, behind champions Al Duhail, Al Rayyan and Al Sadd in that order, whereas Al Rayyan ended up as runners-up, just one point behind Al Duhail.
Umm Salal 0 vs Al Khor 0
Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2020
Venue: Al Ahli Stadium
Umm Salal and Al Khor shared points following a goalless draw in Week 2 of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League at the Al Ahli Stadium on Tuesday. It was the first point of Umm Salal, who had lost 0-3 to Al Duhail in their opener, while Al Khor moved on to two points, having earlier held Al Arabi to a 2-2 draw.
Umm Salal made the first attempt at the goal in the fourth minute with a shot from Yannick Sagbo, who is back in their fold this season. However, Al Khor goalkeeper Baba Djibril saved it. Al Khor’s first opportunity came in the 11th minute when Ibrahim Amada dodged more than one player in the Umm Salal defense and passed the ball to Said Brahimi at the goal, but the latter hit wide of the target.

Al Wakrah shocked reigning champions Al Duhail 1-0 in Week 2 of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League at the Education City Stadium on Tuesday. Mohammed Benyettou scored the all-important goal in the 11th minute, as Al Wakrah put behind their 1-2 loss to Al Ahli in Week 1.
Al Duhail, who had beaten Umm Salal 3-0 in their opener, will now head into the 2020 AFC Champions League, which will resume on 14th September with all West Zone matches being scheduled in Doha.
Al Duhail were on the attack from the beginning, whereas Al Wakrah took time to settle down.
Al Ahli 2 vs Al Arabi 0
Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2020
Venue: Al Ahli Stadium
Al Ahli proved ‘two’ good for Al Arabi in Week 2 of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League at the Al Ahli Stadium on Tuesday.
Al Arabi forward Hamdi Harbaoui’s own goal in the 58th minute and Nabil El Zhar’s goal in the 60th minute sealed the issue in favor of Al Ahli, who now have six points, having beaten Al Wakrah 2-1 in the opening round.
The Brigadiers thus succeeded in sustaining the momentum and bagging the maximum number of points in the early stages.
*Week 3 matches will be played on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, 2020.
Games will be played at the Qatar SC, Al Duhail, Al Khor and Al Arabi Stadiums.
However, the high-profile match between Al Sadd and reigning champions Al Duhail has been postponed to a later date owing to their commitments in the 2020 AFC Champions League, which will resume on September 14 with all West Zone matches being scheduled in Doha.
