Should Doha bid for the 2028 Olympic Games?
Qatar is currently hosting the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC). This is the first time the prestigious meeting has come to the Gulf region.
What it lays bare is Qatar’s continued push to be acknowledged as the world’s sports capital. It is impossible to find another country that has hosted or will host major competitions in the future.
The country, which hosted the 2006 Asian Games, 2010 IAAF Indoor Athletics World Championships, 2011 AFC Asian Cup football, 2015 IHF Handball World Championships and 2016 UCI Road World Cycling Championships, will now organise the gymnastics world championships (2018), athletics worlds (2019), FIFA World Cup (2022) and the FINA Swimming Worlds (2023).
For Qatar, the natural next step will be hosting the 2028 Olympic Games. Though the country tried and failed to win the bid twice in the past, for the 2016 and 2020 Games, that should not discourage them from trying again.
Qatar already boasts of a number of stadiums and more are being built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With most of the infrastructure already in place, the only likely problem they could face is the adverse climate. But organising the competition in October is not completely out of question.
Hosting the 2028 Olympics will also neatly tie into the country’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan.
Should Doha officially bid for the 2028 Olympic Games? Are they better poised to win the bid the next time? The answer to both these questions is a loud, resounding yes!
