This year, Qatar has proved its position as a leading sports nation in the Middle East. The country managed to thrive on the sports front despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. After hosting several international sports tournaments and events in the State, Qatar has confirmed its global position too.

The FIFA Arab Cup 2021 was held in Qatar under the world football governing authority from November 30 to December 18. The event was a close rehearsal of the upcoming Fifa World Cup 2022 and emerged as an absolute victory. Additionally, the Qatari National Team finished in third place in the Arab Cup after defeating Egypt. The star player of the Qatari Team, Akram Afif, was awarded the bronze ball as the third-best player in the entire tournament.

Around the same time, Qatar also organized the first-ever Formula One Grand Prix at the Lusail International Circuit. Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Foundation (QMMF) and F1 have also agreed to add Qatar to the Formula One calendar from 2023 for the next 10 years.

Qatar’s achievements also scaled new heights in the 2020 Summer Olympics, where the country’s athletes won two gold medals and one bronze medal. In the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, Qatar won the bronze medal for the men’s shot put F34 event.

The Olympic football team also qualified for the AFC U-23 Cup finals and is play in Uzbekistan next year against Syria.

Qatar’s swimming team also swept a total of 52 medals (30 gold, 15 silver, and 7 bronze) at the 28th GCC Aquatics Championships in Doha. The team also aced the first Arab championships for the 16-18 age group by winning first place with a total of 30 medals.

The Duhail Club won against Kuwait and grabbed first place in the 23rd Asian Championship for Men’s Handball Champions League held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah bagged the 2021 FIA World Cup for Cross-country Rallies in the Doha Grand Prix in March 2021.

Khalid Al-Mohannadi from Qatar also won the European Championship in the World Aquabike Championships in Poland. Qatari cyclist, Saeed Al-Sulaiti, won the Spanish CIV Open at the Jerez Circuit in Spain.

The country also witnessed several achievements by Qatar Equestrian horses at many prominent races in Europe. Qatar has scaled many more accolades by hosting and participating in other sports, such as golf, judo, tennis, squash, badminton, billiards, snooker, taekwondo, futsal, fencing, shooting, table tennis, and rugby.
