Internet speed in Qatar to increase significantly by end of 2015
Qatar expects a significant increase in Internet penetration once the fibre optic broadband network is completed by the end of the year.
Under the initiative of the government at least 95 percent of the country is planned to be covered by a national broadband network.
"The use of the Internet will increase immensely once the broadband rollout is finished by 2015-end," said the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics.
In a report on Sustainable Development Index 2014, the ministry said a revolutionary increase in the use of cell phones took a serious toll on fixed line phones.
Sketching the telecoms sector scene in the country from 2006 until 2013, the ministry said in its above report that there were 21.9 fixed telephone lines in the country for every 100 residents in 2006.
That number was down considerably to 16.6 lines per 100 residents in 2013 due to a rapid rise in the number of mobile phone subscribers.
From 88.2 units per 110 people in 2006 (or 88.2 mobile phone users for every 110 people), there were 190 cell phone users per 110 people in 2013, an increase of 11 percent annually.
The ministry said that since 2007 the number of cell phone users in the country has rising significantly.
Meanwhile, as for the targets mentioned in the National Broadband Plan for the country, the entire population is to have the ability to choose between a minimum of two broadband retail providers by 2016, irrespective of location.
The rationale behind this is that robust competition will lower prices, improve quality and develop new services.
Second, 95 percent of the households are to have the ability to access affordable and high quality broadband service of at least 100 Mbps effective download and 50 Mbps effective upload speeds by 2016.
Third, all businesses, schools, hospitals and government institutions are to have high quality access to at least 1 Gbps
download and upload speeds by 2016. Moreover, digital literacy is to be expanded to the entire mainstream population by 2016, in conjunction with guarantees of the user's digital privacy, protection of personal data and freedom of opinion and expression. [The Peninsula]
