A shelf dedicated to free food for the needy
In a first such gesture, a shopping centre in Al Khor has put up a refrigerated shelf on its premises, stuffed with food one can pick for free provided one doesn’t have cash to buy food or is unemployed.
Instructions are written atop the shelf in Arabic and English which say this is free food and only for those who have either no cash to buy food or those who are unemployed.
There are instructions at the bottom of the shelf as well, in Arabic and English, which politely ask beneficiaries to exercise restraint and not empty the shelf and make sure that others like them also benefit from the largesse.
A cross-section of people this daily contacted for comment praised the initiative and said local charities should come forward and join hands with shopping outlets and restaurants to launch such shelves.
People feel that outlets like malls, hypermarkets and restaurants should have such shelves as part of their social corporate responsibility. It is a humanitarian and very thoughtful gesture, people said.
There are some who are unemployed and might at times not have cash to buy food. They have tremendous self-respect so can’t beg.
Some see such initiatives as an extension of gestures by some philanthropist Qataris who buy large number of ‘khubs’ packets and keep at the exit of mosques during Friday prayers.
One can see people, many of them low-income workers, picking a packet or two while leaving the mosque.
This is What matters at the end of the day NOT money or Fame just "Humanity" doing something for the needy !
congratulations to the Management of that Shopping Center for showing that we still can be human and all is not lost YET........ God bless u

It was only yesterday a young man walked up to me telling me that he has been out of work and that he very was hungry. It was clear from his face the person was in real need. Putting aside all barriers of nationality, cast, color or creed, I helped him out in whatever way I could. Later, it made me think how many of such genuinely needy people are around in Qatar. One could easily asses this from the long lines seen at various camps during Ramadhan where free meals are offered. This single step of free food shelves, and possibly the first of its kind in the country to provide free food to the hungry, will definitely go a long way to help out such people. More of such outlets would help reduce the sufferings of the needy. Surely, Supermarkets which are minting money, could put up such shelves where food which is almost near expiry could be kept for free disposing off. This act would fill the empty stomachs of humans rather than that of trash cans. My hats off to the outlet that has taken this noble step of setting up of free food shelves.
Really Great initiative !!!
Masha ALLAH, hope other Malls also follow this.
feels so warm and fuzzy when one reads something like this....saw a young qatari woman send her little girl out of the car with a 500 riyal note to some construction workers...they patted the girl's head and signaled the mother that they'd pray for her..i didn't stop smiling until a long time after:-)
Such a thoughtful act of kindness!Really appreciate the great work.
This is great, hope those people begging at the streets and those who knocking on your door to ask for money will be lessen.
two thumbs up for that.
Its a great thing to see, wishing employers wont abuse it and stop providing food to their labours like they did with the drinking water, where they should provide them with drinking water but we see them getting their own from mosques coolers.
I wish everyone buy some some food and put it in these shelves too.
There should be an instruction from Qatar government for all hotels n restos to put up free food fridge outside to donate food after every party.
Great initiative!!!
very noble cause and I shall surely contribute in providing snacks or kubus outside mosques for the needy people or low income.
humanity exist! I can only say wow!
Jazak'Allah
I bow.
