WATCH:Fresh Local Dates Festival 2021 to feature over 80 farms
Starting today from 4 pm at Souq Waqif, the Fresh Local Dates Festival will witness the participation of over 80 local farms and end on July 30, 2021.
Assistant Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) Adel Al Kaldi Al Yafei pointed out that 205 tonnes of dates were sold during the last festival.
Moreover, he explained that the perceived increase in visitors for this year’s festival will result in more dates being sold in comparison to last year.
According to Al Yafei, “what is distinctive about this edition is that all the Gulf countries are now in Rutab (Fresh Local Dates) period, therefore there is a particular interest in the event from the citizens.”
“We were at a stage where we wanted to introduce our dates and let others know more about it, and today we have reached the stage of presenting only the best varieties,” he added.
The Souq Waqif administration has collaborated with the Ministry of Public Health to ensure that precautionary measures are being adhered to.
Furthermore, the festival tent will have a floor space of 3,600 square meters and will be able to accommodate 720 people at once.
Al Yafei also noted that organizers have sent samples of the participating farms' products to laboratories during the last four days to confirm they are pesticide-free.
The festival's Organizing Committee has set conditions for the dates available for sale to encourage healthy food from these participants, including that the fresh dates featured in the festival be in the ripening stage and odor-free. Furthermore, the dates should have a natural flavor and aroma.
The festival is part of a larger MME initiative to offer platforms for local goods to be sold during harvest season.
Different types of fresh local dates, including Khalas, Al Shishi, Al Khanizi, Barhi, Iraqi, Silji, Sufri, Nabt Saif, Al Sawafi, and Khurdi, will be available at very attractive prices starting today during the festival.
Please note that the festival will be open in the evenings from 4 pm to 10 pm.
