please help my tatay. he's stranded in Qatar

jnacion
By jnacion

May the blessings of our God be upon you. I am writing to ask for any help for my father in Doha,Qatar. He lost his job March of this year, just a month after he went back from the Philippines for his third year contract. He was working in the Palace of the Emir as a chef but was terminated for no reason at all. He already sought help from various agencies but was just turned down. They are also taking hold of his visa and passport and obliging him to settle his loan at once. How can he do this if he is not permitted to work? As a matter of fact, he is given only up to the end of this month to settle his loan. He was also advised to be converted to the moslem religion for the case to be easily solved. But, of course, this is against our faith.
Please help us, he might go to jail, if he won't be able to pay his debt...

... just ignore frustrated, never happy people who think everybody is like their mirror image. Let them dwell in their ignorance and lack of kindness. Shallow- and bitterness are enough punishment for them. They won't give somebody a bone without having been given a whole chicken first. I truly feel sorry for her.

FYI, I experienced what TATAY of the OP is experiencing now. And the kabayans are very helpful and not stingy with helping financially or otherwise.

However, all has to undergo a process.

remember, you're still looking for a job...

1. The father of the OP works at the Emir's palace as one of the kitchen staff.

--> To the OP, you're father can't be a CHEF...he maybe a SOUS CHEF, but couldn't be the TOP MAN in the kitchen cooking for the most important family in Qatar. It's not we don't believe he's not a cook...but sweetie, there's a big difference if you say your dad is a CHEF...a SOUS CHEF, perhaps?

2. A month after his vacation, he got terminated. There are many reasons why you get terminated after vacation. Common reason would be over-extending vacation days without notice or prior approval from immediate supervisor, thus work schedule/operations got affected by this.

--> If you check Qatar Labour Law, it is legal to terminate a person (without notice) if his violation/action will cause work or financial loss to the company/employer.

3. Your father sought help to different agencies? which? The Labour Office, Human Rights, The Philippine Embassy/Phil Overseas Labor Office(aka POLO). Surely, if he approached any of the above-mentioned, he received legal advises on what to do.

4. FYI, one an employee is terminated and has an existing loan in any bank here in Qatar, the company/employer/sponsor is obliged to inform said bank that the employee is terminated and all money due to the employee will be forwarded to the bank. This is the protocol as the employer does not want to be legally accountable for the employee's salary/personal loan after separation from the company.

5. Your father could still work...IF AND ONLY IF he is given a NO OBJECTION LETTER that he could transfer sponsorship/employer. The only problem is IF the employer won't give him that "letter"

6. Your father was given a due date to settle up his existing loan...which is NOT POSSIBLE coz he don't have a job. (Let me guess, it's Mashreq Bank...lmao)

--> (your father signed blank checks) when he took the loan. His salary is forwarded to that bank where the monthly payment are dediucted automatically. He's given a deadline or the bank will file A POLICE COMPLAINT for bouncing checks...and then the police will contact your father to settle the loan OR a court case will be filed against him.

In my opinion, it would be best if this will happen. Coz then, he could explain to the court what happened and he could be given a chance to do find a job and settle his loan. The previous/employer will have no choice but to issue an NOC for him to comply with the COURT's decision.

But if the employer will not...your father will serve sentence (let's say 3 - 6 months maximum 1 year) and will get deported.

The advise for him to convert to ISLAM is sickening. But it has merit as well. know that some filipinos do this for reasons like career advancement, personal (do i need to elaborate? I don't think so).

YOU NEED ADVISE? HMMM...

If you don't want your father to go to jail, I guess the best way is for your family to come up with the money and pay his debt.

as you said, your father had approached many agencies and found no solution.

Here is a slight positive thing for you, your father will be in all option will be called in the CID or a case would be filed by the bank. He can always asked for consideration to pay back by working. And he can work if he really wanted to. He can make compromise with the bank. The bad news is, he can't come home 'til he finished settling his loan as for sure, he already have a hold departure order here.

Your father may have pissed someone (with a "power" at the place of work) so this happened. He may go to jail but can make some arrangement with the authorities for him to get a job and pay back the loan. It's a matter of sincerity! Good morning!

Just pay back the loan..

If he bought house in Philippines with it, sell the house..

Bought a car, sell the car..

And yes it is dumb to keep taking loans just because it is easily available here and running up tons of debts.. Once out of the country, your dad isn't going to pay back any loan so the bank will need the money BEFORE he leaves.

So funny this thread... some people are more interested in commenting on what someone else has commented rather than actually suggesting some way out.

@OP...if whatever you are saying is true, your best bet would be to seek help from embassy or arrange the money within family and friends... waiting for anyone else to come to your rescue in any way wouldn't be the best suggestion.

All the best.

janab, for your information, there was a labor worker in my company who was sentenced for imprisonment for a sexual violation. later on while in prison, he was suggested to change religion to become muslim and then they lowered his sentence and able to go out by Bail. a hearing in court was scheduled from time to time.

Wow that’s sad,

Well no offence but what did he do with the money he took the loan with, i mean if it’s a car surrender the car or whatever he bought, he should take the receipt to court on his next hearing and surrender whatever he bought. I mean he had to do something with the money...

but again i feel bad for you may Allah help you find a peaceful solution(if what your saying is the truth ofcourse) .

Isobel, you are familiar with the Emir's staff? Or just being downright racist and generalizing? Are these the manners your British Nanny taught you? Or did you learn them in boarding school?

The Emir has Western Chefs.

He only has Pinoys/Indians as the lowest of the low.

If this man was sacked, he probably deserved it.

Don't buy into this crap.

By the way, if you can't settle loans over here you are stuffed!

I am sorry this is a scam.

they have mouths big enough to put their 2 feet it.

Indian Janab lives with his parents...

Sudanese rashid is obviously bored out of his brains...

Algerian black_devil aka "qatarigirlzdontflirtthat" (who claimed to be an American) got too much time on his hands coz he's still looking for a job...

so, what do we got?....The 3 Stoogies

These boys don't know anything from chicken poop and they have the nerve to make comments on things they don't know...

but hey, QL is a web forum and anyone is FREE to say what they want to much less spill whatever gray matters left in that so called skull attached to their necks.

Well that's why you should have limited liabilities in a foreign land where laws are not always crystal clear.. If loans are easily available, it doesn't mean you keep taking them..

What kind of help are you seeking on QL??? Monetary help or what should your father do???

Sorry to hear of your father's predicament. The sad fact is that many expats find themselves in this position. We take a loan, utilize the money and if the job goes we cannot pay back.

All I can say is to be strong. Perhaps the embassy and especially the community can help you in raising some funds.

Good luck !

jnacion, Pls tell your father do not change his religion just for money. Keep faith on God. I am sure God will help you. To be a Muslim is worth only if he accepts Islam from depth of his heart. I will repeat not for money. I do not know what kind of help are you seeking here on QL. Pls clear your intention. I might be able to help you.PM me if you feel my advice is worth for you.

Hey jnacion .

as you said he s terminated in march , so he s staying here under what visa .

and as far i know as long his company terminated him they are responsible for his comitments .

for the issue of converting to islam , i guess its one of the advices others trying to gave to him to solve the problem and get some help and money if he do it , but i am sure no body is going to force anyone on that especially in qatar .

Pray for him and get more details in order to see what ways really can help him

dont laugh if you dont know what you're laughing at... the subject is not a funny matter, it's a problem looking for advise for a solution ...

jnacion, did your father sought help from the embassy? i know they are always the last to respond most of the time but did he tried? i heard that there are cases wherein converting to Islam helps a lot in solving the problem, but of course it's not always the right solution...
