For any fire to burn it has to have at least 3 basic elements, namely fuel, heat and oxygen. To fight a fire one has to try and eliminate at least one of these elements. Water being sprayed on the outside of the building cooled the building down and prevented the fire from spreading through convection and conduction to other parts of the building. The flames inside the have to be smothered to remove the oxygen which can be done by water or foam.To remove the actual fuel was difficult due to the smoke and yes, TOXIC fumes, not just from the fabric, but plastic pipes and any other material that heats up.Certain metals also produce toxic fumes when heated. They had the initial fire under control at one stage but more than likely when damping down/mop up started where they take out and break up the pile of burnt fabric and other materials it got exposed to oxygen again and flared up. The new buildings being constructed are supposed to abide by strict building and safety regulations and have more reliable fire alarms, smoke detectors and fire fighting extinguishers and equipment available. Older sub standard buildings on the other hand are fire hazards just waiting to happen. If you consider how packed they are with flammable materials such as in the Souq, it is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Luckily, and contrary to some reports, no one was hurt or killed by the fire directly and 20 or more firemen were treated for smoke inhalation. Only 1 person was transported to hospital due to being struck by a car at the onset of the fire. The driver was most likely looking at the fire and not on the road. Please, don't knock the firemen. More often than not, they put their lives in danger to save others irrespective of their educational qualifications. We cannot compare 3rd world or developing countries to have the same level of expertise as those portrayed in "Ladder 49" 'Towering inferno" or "Backdraft".

Can you imagine any other country where a relatively small fire would be commented on by so many people? For goodness sake, this is a country with only one city, it is easy to get things out of perspective. I can't think why so many people live here, so much of the time isolated incidents such as a fire, being hassled, shock horror a purse being stolen (when actually it turned out she had left it on the counter, something the poster forgot to add to his initial post) are treated as everyone's business and of national importance. I am not saying that those who lose their lives, their homes and their families don't have my full sympathy but stuff happens. It happens in Qatar, the rest of the Gulf, Europe, US Asia etc etc etc. I know where I feel safest for sure.

Qatar is a new country with new technology so just like every country it takes time to work through its growing pains. Hopefully they will build water tanks near to commercial areas so they can have water to put out fires more readily. I think transporting water to the fires also makes the putting out more difficult it has time to grow! Even in the mtns in America we have to have underground reserves to fight forest fires.

Fireman in Qatar are most Arabic speaking people. But the fire engineers most philipino, singapore, australia. The fireman all arabic speaking, maybe the fireman still need to learn and have no actual experience so very slow action as some noticed. It will take time and more experience before fireman learn, that;s if they really want to learn.

You see it all over Qatar buildings are poorly maintained and equipment is old and in bad shape, given they said it was an Air conditioner that caused the fire either the electric wiring was not up to code or it was old and not maintained. I think we need better standards of code enforcement and inspection processes! I guess wasta is working too well. Also, shop keepers store goods in ways that are unsafe as well, many times stocking so much its hard to move in the store.

I leave in a new building and authorities did 3 separate fire inspection in the building, one on alarm system, one tecnical and one separate for underground car park, so i think that they are improving standards and methods, the reason is probably to much new construction at same time that they dont have time to check the old ones...

Do you know all the details about shutting off a fire? Do you know that they may used base foams or others chemicals which is 4 times than the usual water can do and it depends on the materials source of fire. I've seen that place. Its full of garments and looks confined space. It is very difficult for the fireman to go inside. Garments are just like rubbers that even it melts the fire is still on it. Try to think of it even if you have all the PPE's but still you cannot do more inside coz of the small walkways. Pare wag mo namin sirain ang moral ng mga Pilipino sa mga comments mo.

It is really offensive to say,"Why are you working here if you don't like here so what, GO!" It is based on facts that Qatar is being dominated by foreign skilled labourers due to inefficient or incapacity of the country for Manpower supply. Whereas, majority of Qatari citizens are in pedestal level. And yet they don't need to work because they can pay. The one thing that is very idiotic notion is most Qatari people are so defensive with its own flaws. Maybe the one thing that they should say is " we appreciate your comments or any violent re-actions" because it is true. Am I right? Every people in the world Qatar sucks! The location of the fire yesterday is just a few blocks away from our office. So, I can say that I saw it all. It started at around half past ten in the morning and yes, it was only a small fire. There was only 1 firetruck taking care of it but then eventually the fire spread rapidly. It is true that one of it was a textile shop that's why it was quite difficult to keep the fire from spreading.

By the time I was about to leave the office, that was at around 6pm, there were still smoke coming out of the buildings. I can remember seeing grey, black and white smoke coming out off it.

I think that if they could've have sent more firetrucks to help put out the fire, it could've been more helpful. But then again, you can see the water was just aimed at the smoke and not even on the base of the fire. I'm no fireman, but I know that if you're trying to put off a fire, you should aim on the base as well. Apparently, there were far from doing that.

I have seen a similar pathetic attempt to put off a fire in Villagio a few weeks after it opened. The fire started in a shop. A very small localized fire turned in to chaos, due to lack of procedures and training. Everybody was running in all directions and not even the public was kept away.

It was a pathetic display of organizational skills... unfortunately common in this very young country.

Better training for personnel might have helped.

But consider circumstances...the narrow streets, the back to back souqs, add to that the old design of the buildings, along with flammable materials inside...we have to accept that it was a difficult task. So lets be grateful that the firemen atleast tried to do a good job.

I saw the fire in person, and what the firemen had to deal with was not just an easy job. There were no access roads to get to the heart of the fire, and the heat was intense (like curl your eyelashes intense!).

The fact that the fire did not spread and was contained in just a small area of the souq shows the hard work and the good job they did. It could have been a lot worse with all those stores and buildings connected. It was really windy which made matters worse, but they were able to put out the fire with minimal damage. It could have been a huge disaster. Before you criticize them, why don't you try doing their job for a day?

and mjamille28- it certainly was a huge fire not a collapsed roof
