although Mr. jackmohan is quite right having not to worry much when it comes to utility expenses once you get started, I think Mr. Richard has a good reason to think twice for those adventurers out there before embarking their luck here. Moreover the issues of sponsorships, work values etc., remains a lump on the throat of some expats. Unless Qatar opens her mind to an idea of a new market which could enhance good emplyment package w/out compromising her own culture, then I guess this will mark a great step towards progress.(I hope so..this is just my opinion).

You summed up my opinions on management in Qatar perfectly. The employer/sponsorship relationship is a big problem and until this is changed (as it has been in Dubai) the progress of the private sector here will continue to be slow, bureaucratic and not nearly as productive as it should be.

Its also the structure of comapnies that is wrong here. The family groups are inefficient and employees are not valued much, they are seen as tools of the trade rather than people with imagination and flair. Management needs to encourage risk taking and to allow employees to take initiative.

If you come here to work, make sure you work for the right company because it is very difficult to change.

Hi richard123,

I am intrigued by your comments about management in Qatar. Are you saying that Qatari companies tend to be hierarchical and most decisions, even tactical/operational, are made centrally by top management? Is lack of independence and freedom at work an issue for mid/junior management in Qatari organizations?

If yes, I may need to pay attention to that.

Thanks.

is a problem facing Qatari businesses. This largely because of the stupid sponsorship employment laws. There are many unhappy, unmotivated employees who cannot change jobs without having to leave the country. If they are unhappy and unmotivated they will not perform well.

Also, management is generally weak. Managers do not sufficiently empower their employees to make decisions and take risks. This causes apathy and delay rather than innovation and imagination. Decsions are not made and it becomes easier to do nothing rather than make a decision that could be wrong and career limiting.

Finally, a lack of transparency, trust and honesty hinders business here. There seems to be too little of this between employees and employers.

I for one do not Imagine they have much competition or challenge.

Nobody is really intrested in selling you anything. You have to buy from them. Its as if you are doing them a favour.

There is almost zero competition. Everybody seem to have his fixed clients & income. It is not like they are going out of business.

Its damn difficult to start a business (due to sponsorship, staffing etc) but once you are started there is no question of shutting down because of loss.

eg:

1.Electricity is cheap.

2.Water is also relatively cheap.

3.Transport / petrol is cheap.

4.Local Calls are free.

What more does one want for a starter?
