Winked at a girl? Pay Rs 3,000!

Parvathy S Nayar, TNN | Jul 18, 2012, 12.00AM IST

A court in Kerala recently fined a youth on the grounds of eve teasing for winking at a girl. Fair punishment? Celebs react...

Can a wink drag you into court proceedings for over two years and end up with being slapped a fine? Yes, if the story of V K Ilyas, a youth in Malom in Kasargod district, Kerala, is anything to go by.

The Hosdurg judicial first class court slapped a fine of Rs 3,000 on him on the grounds of eve teasing and the long arm of the law punished him with a fine for the incident that occurred on November 15, 2010, when the girl was waiting for a bus in front of the Kasaba Higher Secondary School. Now how fair or unfair is that? We asked a few M-Town celebs their take on the issue.

Actress Meghana Raj says the verdict, she hopes, would be an eye-opener to many. "I would say it's a very good step. Living in times when women can't step out into safe environs after six o'clock, this verdict comes with due importance. It might not be as serious a crime as the molestation of a girl in public in Guwahati recently. However, living in times as these, I would say that the judgment is fair enough," the actress asserts.

However, actress Saranya Mohan begs to differ. "I personally have had guys winking at me during my school and college years. And I feel as long as you can just ignore it, then so be it," she says, hastily adding, "Now that doesn't, in any way, mean that I'm not aware of the seriousness of the issue at hand, or that I'm supporting all guys who are out to trouble girls.

There are bigger crimes happening here. Can that be dealt with in equal seriousness? Will bigger penalties and punishments be given to the perpetrators of bigger crimes?" she quizzes.

Actor Rejith Menon feels that two years is a long time to have implemented a punishment. "For one, I don't think winking is a serious crime. And if it is, why has it taken two long years for the guy to be slapped a fine of Rs 3,000? In the Gulf, punishment is severe, no matter what the crime. Moreover, I don't think they take this long to punish any culprit. That explains the comparatively lesser crime rate in the Gulf," he points out.

Cheers for the currency conversation. The fine doesn't sound so oppressive now. The more important issue is whether or not the lady in question was attractive enough to merit winking at. I really wish they would post pictures with these stories.

khaderbhai, that's why I said the guy probably couldn't afford a lawyer. This could easily have been proved to be 'drooping eyelid' syndrome..:)

INR 3000 would be close to 60 USD

It's strange 'winking' is deemed as eve-teasing in a relatively free country like India.

Seems the poor man couldn't afford a lawyer and the girl's dad was a big shot.

There are hundreds of female torture cases in Kerala which are not even getting any fair attention from the public or from the police. Culprits are escaping punishments with the support of political leaders or by spending money on good lawyers and it is funny to read such a news.

Sometimes it starts with winking and the situation gets way out of hands before you know it in India. Its good that the law is being more strict these days.I hope they don't give this up after some time.
