workers losing out on $100 billion
On workers in Qatar and the world cup:
Qatar's migrant workers losing out in $100bn World Cup preparations
"Over the next few years they will build stadiums for the World Cup, an eco city for 200,000 people, a giant airport and metro, as well as some of the biggest gas plants in the world. But they have few rights, most live in squalid conditions, and have no voice to demand better conditions."
"A new report, published to coincide with the opening of the climate talks, says the average migrant worker makes only $300 a month in a country where the average salary is 7,800 riyal (around $2,140) a month and gross national income per capita is well above $80,000."
This is from an article by a journalist in Qatar for the climate change conference. It is a good example of what will happen in the world media as Qatar seeks a higher profile. My hope is that it will encourage reform.

the most positive outcome of Qatar exposure to high profile events, COP18, FIFA2022...
Hope it does bring the change which is due for long time.
Let us see though I am not hopeful at all.
Certainly hope high profile publications of this kind will sway the powers that be to take the imperative measures required to prevent such wide scale shortchanging and oppression of workers. These people will after all play a huge role in the betterment of the country, and thus deserve much better.
