Face-to-face or in other words, one-on-one meetings with your boss are seen as valuable opportunities to connect, communicate and collaborate. Especially when you are starting a new job, which is exciting as well as daunting at the same time. These one-on-one meetings provide a great chance to connect, learn, and grow professionally. Here is a simplified guide to help settle those nerves and let you navigate these meetings professionally and effectively.

Getting ready for it

  • Understand your goals

Be clear about what you want to achieve in the meeting. It could be clarifying a task, an assignment or even your job role. Seek guidance in these meetings or use this time to share updates on your work.

  • Check previous meeting notes

Before you walk in, have a look at the previous meeting minutes or notes you have, and see for any feedback if any to help you stay in track with your progress.

  • Bring necessary documents

If you have any reports, documents, emails, or questions, bring them all with you to the meeting. It indicates that you’ve come prepared and have the interest to contribute.

Break the Ice

  • Be open

Although it may be daunting, share your thoughts and ideas openly. It’s okay to ask questions and admit when you genuinely need help.

  • Listen actively

Pay attention to what your boss says. It helps build a good relationship and shows that you value their input.

  • Find mutual understanding

Take a moment to really connect on a personal note. This could be on the grounds of hobbies, travelling, interests, or even simple weekend plans.

Organize the meeting

  • Start with a plan

Organize and plan a flow for the meeting. It could be from discussing tasks, raising questions, and speaking of challenges you’re facing.

  • Be mindful of time

Keep an eye on the time spent and stay focused on the important topics of discussion. This helps you to cover everything you have in mind without running overtime and being an inconvenience to your boss.

  • Prioritize topics

Hit the important topics first. This ensures you tackle and clarify the key points even if the meeting is called off in a short time.

Engage in conversation

  • Ask for advice

Don’t hesitate to ask for advice or feedback. And be prepared to receive what you ask no matter if it’s positive or negative. Receive constructive criticism in a positive manner to improve yourself.

  • Share the wins and challenges

Highlight what you’ve accomplished and where you need support. It gives your boss insights into your progress.

  • Talk about your goals

Share your career dreams and ask about growth and promotion opportunities within the company.

After the meeting

  • Note-down action items

Write down what was discussed and any tasks you need to follow up on. It helps you stay organized and accountable.

  • Ask for feedback

Seek feedback on how the meeting went and if there’s anything you can improve on.

Keep in mind that these meetings are chances to learn and grow. Approach them with enthusiasm and a willingness to engage, with time, you’ll become more comfortable and confident in these interactions, helping you thrive in your new role.
