All round advice for a newbie

Hi to all,
I am flying out the Doha next weekend to be interviewed for a 2 year role at NDIA having already been interviewed in the UK. I have a lot of questions to ask my potential employers but I would like to qualify some of these questions with some “first-hand” experiences.
Therefore, I hope you don’t mind the following lengthy list of salary / cost of living questions.
The prospective role has a gross package of approx. 60,000QAR per month. This includes 14,500 QAR accommodation allowance & 2,500 QAR car/transport allowance.
The prospective employer has advised that they a number of the employers use the Beverly Hills Tower for accommodation (I think the employer has some sort of “agreement").

Question 1: Can anyone advise if the 14,500 QAR accommodation allowance will cover the monthly rent for staying at the Beverly Hills Tower?

Question 2: Can anyone advise if the Beverly Hills Tower is worth the rent or are there better value for money places to stay?

Question 3: Can anyone advise if the 2,500 QAR travel allowance will cover a monthly vehicle lease? If yes, can anyone suggest a good vehicle leasing company?

Question 4: Give the above accommodation & vehicle lease costs can anyone advise a “typical” monthly expenditure for a single guy i.e. how much it would cost me a month to live in Doha (food, entertainment, etc)?
I have been advised that my salary would be paid into a local bank account. From this I will set up a transfer to pay monies back to the UK.

Question 5: Can anyone advise on the typical charges for monthly international transfers & also how much fluctuation there is in the QAR to sterling exchange rates.

I am sure that I will have a lot more questions but I will post these via other Forum Topics

Many thanks

With 60k, you dont have to worry whether to stay at BHT, or in a villa @ West Bay. Being single, i think this is an awesome offer and take it before the company changes it's mind :-). Welcome to Doha

To spend 25-30 k/month here? A single guy??? Are you kidding???

Zen King, come here mate, you're loaded! But don't say anything about you salary package, you can make a loooot of people to hate/envy you...

Putting aside some of the stupid comments that people have placed up above, you'll find that that salary package is very good - unless you live like Michael Jackson did, then you won't have any problems.

Question 1: Can anyone advise if the 14,500 QAR accommodation allowance will cover the monthly rent for staying at the Beverly Hills Tower? Never lived there but if others are living there then it should be ok - best thing you can do though is ask to speak to other future colleagues of yours and get the low down from them. If not, then there are numerous Real Estate agencies around town who will be more than happy to give you a hand (although as with any real estate agency, just be careful of thieves)

Question 2: Can anyone advise if the Beverly Hills Tower is worth the rent or are there better value for money places to stay? Most places in doha aren't worth the money you have to cough up - as we're experiencing at the moment, alot of places are far more expensive then they are actually worth, so in most instances, you may feel you're paying too much.

Question 3: Can anyone advise if the 2,500 QAR travel allowance will cover a monthly vehicle lease? If yes, can anyone suggest a good vehicle leasing company?

that is more then enough - there's an AVIS here as well as Budget - check with them.

Expect to spend about 25,000 to 30,000 riyals each month - compared with england it's not that expensive here (yet) so it shouldn't cost u that much.

aside from that u'll find Qatar a very safe place in which to live.

Whether QR60,000 is enough is completely dependent on the lifestyle you plan to lead. I expect it will be enough though.

BHT is good, and more importantly, a well established place - i.e. everything is up and running and the teething problems have mostly been sorted out. You may have an issue finding a free apartment there though.

Zig-Zag is brand new, plus Amnesia has a vested interest in the place ;)

BHT is also in a better location from the respect that City Center is within walking distance. Zig-Zag is good if you want to buy a Ferrari from the show room on the Pearl. BHT is approx. 10-15min nearing NDIA as well.

Question 1: Can anyone advise if the 14,500 QAR accommodation allowance will cover the monthly rent for staying at the Beverly Hills Tower?

It's 21 for a three bedroom and 16 for a two bedroom. It's a nice place though.

Question 2: Can anyone advise if the Beverly Hills Tower is worth the rent or are there better value for money places to stay?

I'd wait and rent at the Zig Zag, it's in the same area, not in the congestion zone, and close to the Pearl. It'll probably be 14-16,000 for a fully furnished place.

Question 3: Can anyone advise if the 2,500 QAR travel allowance will cover a monthly vehicle lease? If yes, can anyone suggest a good vehicle leasing company?

Yes it will. 2,100 is the avg. You can try the usual, Hertz, Budget, Oscar, etc... or Al Mana have a special promotion for Hummer, Cadillacs etc.. (3 months for the price of 2)

Check out http://www.iloveqatar.net and the Cost of Living section.

Question 5: Can anyone advise on the typical charges for monthly international transfers & also how much fluctuation there is in the QAR to sterling exchange rates.

Roughly fixed at 40-100 QR

There is a lot of fluctiation because QR is pegged to dollar.

1 pound hit 8 qr at one point, now it's 5.2 (which is great if you're in Qatar)

14.500 not going to cover beverly hills tower, however try beverly hills al rayyan apartment. You can get 2 bedroom flat for 11.000 and it is in the compound with a nice facilities

we paid 35 QR charges by Doha Bank and Barclay Bank UK charging 6 pound to receive it.

you don't have to worry about a thing, with that kind of pay.

Everything will be peanuts for you, as a single guy!
