How to get about?

Hi everyone,
I will hopefully be moving to Qatar in the new year and I was wondering if it is essential to have a car to get about? Is the public transport any good out there?
Thanks
Chris

Yes, you will absolutely need a car. Get something tough and reliable to get you through traffic jams and extreme morning/afternoon heat. :)

Taxis are practically impossible to catch unless you are at one of the 2 major shopping malls (Vilaggio and City Center), where there is a designated area for pick-up/drop-off.

There is a bus service, but it does not run to all parts of the city. You'll find yourself stranded if you cannot cross a highway to get to a bus stop, for example, since there are no pedestrian bridges and very few safe crossings.

My husband and I have one car. I just drive him to work in the morning and pick him up after and I have the car all day. It's a nice way to share a frustrating commute.

Definately need a car, otherwise you will be isolated and frustrated. MOst time you have to book a taxi the day before, even then you arent guaranteed a taxi, hence you will get stuck if you have to go out impulsively.

You will definately need a car as public transport is not very good and taxies not reliable. Unless you get transport to & from your job, then you dont depend on strict schedules and can risk having to wait for a taxi which can sometimes take quite a while.
