How much traffic violation fine u have paid??

dev.in.doha
By dev.in.doha

Hello QLers,

Recently one of my colleague paid 6000 QAR for red light crossing. Which is his one month salary approx.

I heard from many that on an average Traffic violation fine is around 1000 QAR per person per year. In my 6 months driving in Qatar, i m still lucky not to have paid any fine.

Share abt ur fine if u dont mind.

Mine was totally pathetic and ridiculous !

Got a fine of total 1100 in a week (Last week) :(

First one is of my fault. I took an "illegal" left turn in a main signal and a cop noted down my car number !

Second, still a mystery. My dad received a message in his phone from metrash that a speed fine has been registered with 102 KM/Hr. But, when checked in the website, it just says "Loading a vehicle in a way that causes danger to people and properties"...

Hope I can somehow negotiate on the second fine but Im just feeling a bit lucky coz, none of them counts for points :)

Nearly 2 years here and confused with my 2 fines to date...1st fine was for parking outside W Hotel in the evening. No restrictions anywhere and not blocking or being of danger to anyone - 500QR and 3 points. 2nd fine was for speeding with NO POINTS. How is this possible? Points for parking and not speeding????

They need to sort out the system here. With no legitimate way to challenge the fines people HAVE to pay, unless you want to face the gauntlet of the police station.

If, as I'm lead to believe the offices are now paid commission on tickets (10% apparently), without them having to supply photographic proof of offences, then the system becomes comical and simply a revenue generator (not that it's required!). It's only recently that you've started getting officers on all the main junctions eagerly looking for people to ticket. If it makes drivers wear belts and stop talking on the phone, then great, incentivise away. When it applies to parking...it just doesn't work.

I have always maintained a fairer system would be more like:

pay 30% of your monthly salary for crossing the red light.

This would hit everyone more equally - the mega-rich and the low paid equally.

Mind you given the difficulty the authorities have of enforcing rules, it would be screwed up quite quickly.

By gkramer• 4 Jun 2010 21:03
gkramer

Well we aren't driving in the US now, are we?

6000 does sound a lot though for running a red light but then again your actions on the road can cost someone's life so better be careful while driving.

I do know about you.... but 6000QR for crossing a red light is just too much. I mean there are people that do not even make that much per month, not to mention per year. Sometimes I say to myself that some people are just reluctant to stop ... and therefore I support the extensive amount; but at the same time , poor, labor, drivers & other limited income people are just punished for other people's reckless actions and that is not fair. I have been here for almost 2 years and I have paid almost 2000 QR for different violations. And yes I have reduced a 6000 QR fine to 500 QR. But I did have justifications to support my appeal.I turned right on a RED LIGHT ... for people who are familiar with the driving regulations in the US, know what I am talking about. I simply did not know that it is not allowed in Qatar.

I was at fault. I was driving on autopilot. The light turned red and I stopped, but then made a right turn (like I would do at home) and the camera got me. It was stupid of me, of course. So I went to the traffic department and talked to the director. I explained my situation and was very apologetic and asked if there was anything he could do. The photo shows me making the turn and traveling at less than 5kph and it was my first offense. So he let me go with no fine and no points. I would like to say that I was a great negotiator, but it really depends on your situation, the person's mood, the alignment of the stars and so forth.

MY INTIUITION IS THAT WHEN WE ARE SUFFERING FROM A DIASTER OR BAD EVENT WE TRY TO CATCH OTHERS' SYMPATHY. It is really painful just be neglegent of the traffic light and have to pay your whole monthly salary for that. I used to pay an equal to 50 QR amount of money even when I was driving over 165 KPH in my home, whereas I paid 10 times more just driving 96 in an area where the Mx speed was 80. I think the traffic fines are high for Non-Qataries coming here to save some ... After all I don't like to be fined more than that 7,500 painful one.

I hope all of you may not get such a bad luck.

Regards

Mohsen

for 6000QR, even though they admitted I didn't DO the violation they initially accused me of, (running a red light) 6000QR, even the video they have of me proves I didn't do it, so they gave me some paperwork to do and said they would lower it to the real violation of turning right on red (600QR), which I admit to.

I was happy and waited and waited, and after months I never heard form them, so I went back and did it all over again, and some snobby young Qatari punk gave me the papers again and he signed them and I turned them in again, and waited and waited...

Finally I decided to leave Qatar and my company was waiting for me to take care of the ticket so they could stamp my exit permit, but the traffic people never did it. I was down to two days before I had to leave, and the morons never did it so I finally just went down to pay it, and the funny thing is, they wouldn't let me!

They were all "No, no! Not 6000QR, we fix to 600QR! GO upstairs and do paperwork to change!" I told her I been through all that over the last couple months, and just demanded to pay the whole damn thing so I could get the hell out of that crap country. I consider it a fine I didn't mind paying, as it let me escape.

Yester day I found a sticker in my car for traffic violation in lulu hypermarket parking while I comeback from shopping. Actualy I parked my car between the two cars parked before me and there were no best way to park any car than the way I parked my car but one wheel were out of the line. This is first time for me that any violation in 15 years of my stay in Qatar. And still I dont know the penality that howmuch I have to pay.

500QR for speeding, and 500QR for something else, I don't know what, it was in Arabic and I can't read Arabic. And before you ask, no I didn't even consider questioning it! Has anybody ever been able to have a fine removed or repaid? Now that's an interesting question!
