IS QR 8,500 enough to leave in Qatar?

MaxDan
By MaxDan

I am being offered a job in Doha as a Manager. They Offer QR 8,500, free single accommodation, all utilities paid including cable and internet (not land line which I dont need as they also provide cellphone and allowance). And also the typical expat package, tickets, medical, and so on. I like dine out once a week, groceries once a week for one person, and go out once a week for few drinks (dont drink too much). Then eventually I want to buy a car, cheap as possible but comfortable and with AC of course. Any other tips about life in Qatar would help in my decision.
Thanks

Excellent, thank you. Well after a lot of thinking....I have declined the job, It will be lovely to be in Qatar and learn about the culture and put and up with so many stupid rules, it could be kind of fun. But just for the right price, and QR8,500 is not.

I want to deeply want to thank y'all.

Have a great weekend, and remember.....dont go to the mall! they wont let you in, its friday, the day single people are not free to go to a mall! :) I am in the caribbean now, I will have a beer while driving, and then maybe go to the mall. lol.....just kidding!!! I am sure I will receive some nice comments after this, but just from people with no sense of humor, smart asses!

Try to negotiate to add tranportation allowance for about QR 2000 more or less. Aside from that QR 8500 is fine. You can save up to 4T-5T depends on your life style and expenses. By the way as much possible try to buy clothes in your own country that you've be using for 1 year coz here its very expensive. alright. Good luck!

Friday is family day and I think that is in most malls. It is not that a man and a woman have to enter together, they have family day as people complained because all the labourers come into the malls in big groups with no intention of buying anything. All they do is stare at the woman. The malls are really busy at the weekends so that is why they limit it to families and people who will spend money.

If you attempt to pass through guards and into the mall alone, be sure luck is on your side...

Thanks Andee, very good information and advice.

For Birdiee, with some of you guys I see I have to be verrry specific. Single accommodation on my side means, 1 flat 1 person, "single" NOT SHARED. I know I have internet there might be a phone, but they will not paid for the use, might paid for the rent, I dont care about that.

Eugene...what do you mean is family day and I shouldnt go out shopping??

By eugene_goh• 30 Sep 2009 14:04
eugene_goh

It's ok. Well, I've been here for two months, I spend about QR 200-300 per week mainly on food and cigaratte, other expenses all covered. FYI I cook mostly during weekdays and eat out during weekends like what I used to do in London.

I'm well entertained at home with internet access and cable TV. There's nothing much interesting here that encourage me to spend. I'd rather save some money and travel to more interesting countries every 3 months.

In short, it depends on your life style really, but at first instance when u decide to move here u already know u have to give up on that!

p/s if u are single u should stay home during weekend coz it's family day and u shouldn't go to shopping mall to spend money.

pls dont try to find a "mistake" in the typing or the matter.

he says it is a "single" accommodation, then it must be a flat shared by 2-3 "singlers"

One cannot have internet without Land line unless its a shared connection in a shared housing.

Max Dan you will love it.... dont listen to those that are trying to scare you off... what they are offering is not really great but its a hell of a lot better than what a lot of people here are earning, and your basic things are taken care of... once you get here you will be able to gage where to eat a "decent" meal - where not to go "too expensive" and so on.... just cause its 5 star does not mean its a great meal...there are millions of eating places around...

Living in this part of the world is an experience in itself...You will like it if you are as "adaptable" as you say your are... If you are coming with a view that its gonna be the same as the WEST and want everything to work that way - you will be dissapointed... Life here is a lot slower... and I mean a lot.....

Hi Guys, thank you very much for all of your info and time that you are putting on these, to be honest I am very impressed by your help, thanks a million!!

With the "leave" thing, hahaha, I know sorry about that, I was sleepy when I put that up and my brain played me bad. How can i edit this?

Well guys to be honest I am super confused now, I dont know if it is worth it to go or not, I would love to go to Qatar and work, I dont have a problem with adjusting to different type of country and culture, but I do like to do what I have mentioned above.

Groceries, going out once a week, movie theater, maybe get a car, etc.

I guess companies once they give you a salary offer they dont like to go up if you ask for it? Or is there any where else I can apply for work in Doha with good salaries and benefits?

By anonymous• 29 Sep 2009 19:58

i dont think you need 8500QR to "Leave" qatar. maybe around 4000QR to get a ticket in Qatar Airways to "Leave" qatar ....... lol ...... :D

Just joking .. few of my freinds are getting almost the same salary and they are really happy with it ..but again..its depends on how you gonna live here :)..

Good Luck

I think, since the accommodation is provided by the company, 8500 is not too bad...

To maintain a modest lifestyle he needs:

1500 for the car,

1500 grocery,

1000 entertainment,

1000 other.

He still can save about $1000

The banks here have gotten very strict on car loans now and even my colleagues who make twice that amount have not been able to get car loans. Don't forget that would require full insurance and annual registration. You may be stuck renting which as I said will cost you around 2000/month.

I still believe some people here are giving you advice that will probably not apply to you. I have a good friend from Ecuador here. She came here 4 years ago for 12,000. She does not have a uni degree and was working in administration for a large MNC. She lives a modest lifestyle and I asked her what she thought of this salary being offered to one of her countrymen. She thought it sounded low and you would not be happy with the lifestyle it afforded you here, as well as unable to save much.

Ok, thank you very much for all of your information. It sounds like my offer it is not the worst, but it also it is not so fair. Must of you are right, I will be working a lot, and well eating at home maybe once a day, somthing simple and maybe during my only day off something else.

I just wanted to make sure this was not so bad, as from my point of view, it is less than what I was making recently and plus that I have to work an extra day a week, it seems a little crazy for me and it is not very encouraging, but at the end of the day I have no job right now and also the opportunity could be good in the long term "careerwise".

Good pointer about the car, cause I do not want to rent, cause it is too much money for the 2 years I will spend there, when i could just pay for it monthly and own it, then sell it before I leave, right?

Thanks again.

don't fell in their trap as they claim that they will review your performance after 6 months and my raise it to QAR 10K because its only a VERBAL COMMITMENT not written. So they cannot be trusted at all !!!!!

.

As a MANAGER of a HOTEL, its very less but again if you have a simple/moderate lifestyle then it will be ok for you after reading that most of important expenses (Accomodation, Mobile,Utility Bills) are taken care by your Employer.

.

I would say get Brand New car through Bank [Bank's representative are usually have a desk in Car showroom] and you will have to pay 1k -1500 Monthly only if you go for cheap but reasonable cars e.g. [Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Tida, Suzuki Vitara etc]

.

Anyhow, GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR NEW JOB IN QATAR

OMG, well it sounds like 8,500QR is not good. I mean as I wrote in the topic. Yes my salary is QR 8,500 straight to my pocket.

Expenses:

Grocery once a week, keep in mind I work all day so just one meal a day at home.

Nice dinner out once a week

Transport to work as I have no car, so that already is 1,000QR in taxis.

Once a week going out to a bar or club, but I dont drink that much.

Movies maybe 2-3 times a month.

I dont pay for phone, or house rent, or utilities, it has all been taken care of.

I dont really want to make a bad choice and take this job if the pay is not fair, taking in consideration that respectfully on that side of the world you work 6 days a week.

They mentioned that after 6 months they can review the salary and maybe up to 10,000.

to drink or eat in 5-star restaurants. I usually eat at Thai Snack, Far East or get Shawarma. I do live modestly, although I go to one movie a week, coffee 2-3 times each week and I have cable. I call my family in the States once a week. I do buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and chicken and my grocery bill is a bit high I admit. I rarely shop. And I still couldn't do that on less than 5000/month.

Enough to "live in Qatar" may be different. Cheap car rental like a Nissan Sunny will run you about QR2000; my groceries run me about QR2500; My mobile runs me about QR 1000; and miscellaneous expenses (gas, eating out, movies, cable, entertainment, etc.) run me about QR 2500.
