Safety/Security/Tourism
I am visiting Doha in March. I am a widowed woman travelling alone. Personally I am not worried, however family and friends who know about the trip are very scared and worried. They think that I am going to come to harm coming to Qatar. I'd like to hear from those from other countries - especially from North America - who have had similar reaction by family members/friends. What did you do or say to help them?
Am here.....what a lovely place this is. Of course I've spent the last 5 months in a snowbank so anywhere warm would do! I am enjoying my stay.
6 days till I arrive for my visit.....most of my friends and family think I've lost my mind. Some have been incredibly rude and broken off talking to me. Absolutely ridiculous. I aim to enjoy myself, especially since it is going to be lovely and warm and I've had it with the snow and cold. -18 celcius with windchill in the -30s today. Should I pack my fishing pole? Is there any shore fishing and if so, what kind of fish would I be likely to catch? Also very interested in local beads and yarns/fibers for crocheting purposes.
Welcome and good luck TMT .......

You will be just fine! I've been ten years in the Gulf as a blonde American. Never a problem, lots of wonderful adventures and people.
LOL - I am not bringing my boyfriend with me!!!! And I'll be covering up, nobody wants to see what I've got for crying out loud. I want to visit a souq or two, do some geocaching, see the pearl, look at the architecture, see the museum - maybe ride a camel? Who knows.....all an adventure to me!

Then no worries, you can safely travel in Qatar, some tips from me are,
.. avoid private or illegal taxis, use legal taxis.
.. don't use dress which expose too much body part in public places.
.. don't show love making with your boy friend in public.
aah... and don't forget to bring your boy friend, otherwise you will get boored here exactly like Im feeling....lolsss
I am not planning to make trouble or try illegal things. I would like to see the sites, the museum, the architecture. Go to a souq. I would like to see if I can purchase yarn from the area if there is any, I enjoy crocheting and it would be cool if I had some from the area.
There is nothing to worry for women in GCC, until you are planning to make trouble or illegal things.
Anyway enjoy your stay in Doha.
