US Citizen in Qatar asking about the process of adapting a child from overseas

Hi:

My name is Khal and I am an American citizen. My wife and I are planning to adapt a child to be a brother or sister for our fist child (natural birth). I would like to know what kind of processes I need to do with the US Embassy in Qatar. The child would be adapted from outside Qatar.

Forgot to mention, we are all US Citizens, born and raised there.

Ok, what about this..me and my husband and my daughter (his step daughter) are living here in Qatar for the next 4 years. Can he adopt her here?? I have the paperwork that says her natural father terminated his rights to her voluntarily and my husband is already the managing conservator on my divorce decree. Any info, please PM me!

Q. We are Americans living in Qatar. We just adopted a Vietnamese girl and she is living with us there. How do we get her an American passport?

The same process mentioned above can be used for children adopted overseas by American citizens. While adoption by a U.S. citizen parent does not automatically confer citizenship, it does qualify a child for expeditious naturalization, or citizenship upon entry to the U.S.

You don't adapt a child. You adopt one.

I disagree with Amoud. Qatar DOES understand and respect the notion of adoption -- just in a different way. But I would similarly suggest consulting the US embassy for their assistance/guidance re: documentation you will need to present them to facilitate their end of the process.

Typically most people doing international adoptions work with a specific agency in the child's home country (as different countries have very different regulations). If you've already begin this process, they should guide you along the path of how to proceed.

One thing you WILL need is an adoption home study (I presume you are staying in Qatar until the adoption is complete; if not, then it is silly to do this here as you will simply have to do it again once you move back to US or onto another country. I will PM you additional details about this...).

I know of many Americans who have begun and processed international adoptions while they have been residing in Qatar. Although adoption is a lengthy, expensive process, it is very do-able here.

Good luck!

It is extremely tricky, and seeing as you are not born in the US you will have to further consult with your country of origin. Also, as you are not living in the US the child will not get an American passport and will have to travel on their passport of origin. You need to make an appointment with the embassy and also ask them about the laws in Qatar as they do not accept the notion of adoption.
