Where to live?

I will most likely come to Qatar and work for Qatar Gas. As far as I can see their site is in Ras Laffan up north of Doha. Where should my family and I live? In Ras Laffan? It seems like a boring place. Are the northern areas of Doha nice? We have a 15 month old/young daughter so a child friendly place would be preferred. I believe I have been told that the company cannot provide me with lodging so I get an allowance instead.
I look forward to some suggestions.
Qatar Gas have their own compound, it is accross landmark mall. If possilbe do not ask for allowance, your money will not go far. It would be better if you can deal with them ask for a house in a compound. The compound i went last weekend was all designated for Qatar Gas employee.

You can get 2 or 3 bd apartment with this amount 7000QR.
There is a new law now in Qatar allow the forigners to buy properities in 18 locations in Doha.

Thank you all. I will give you an update on my situation later. I believe I will know today if I am going to Qatar or not. I will remember to ask if my work place will be in Doha or Ras Laffan.

I agree with helloqatar. most company only give allowance for QR7000. With this amount of allowance, what type of apartment is available? What about renting a terrace house or semi-D house?
Safwany, may foreigner buy a house or apartment there?
Be very careful about how much allowance they are giving you for housing, anything less than 10K QR (2800 USD) will not work. I would like to know since Safwany is so keen to help find housing if she knows of any places available for 7,000QR. That is a magic number with some organizations that provide an allowance.
Al Khor is 40Km from Doha (about a 40 min drive), small town, only thing is the RasGas compound and clubs, shopping, eating out, almost everything has to come to Doha if you are not in the compound.
As I know there are many of people who work there they live in Alkhor which is a small village close to Ras Laffan, but also alot of them lives in Doha (about 100KM away).
If you want to live in Doha then let me know so I can help you finding a nice accomodation according to your budget, you need to know that it cost alot now so you will have to ask for a reasonable accomodation allowence.
