21 y/o Brit female moving to Doha

xxxsarahxxx
By xxxsarahxxx

I've just received a pretty good job offer in Doha so I’ve started making preparations for the big move and naturally, I have a few concerns:

1) I'm a 21 year old female and will be moving on my own and i don't know anyone in Qatar. Will settling in be easy? I have a basic grasp on Arabic and I’m not a stranger to the Middle East

2) What is the socialising and nightlife like in Doha? I’m not expecting an Ibiza club scene but I hope there are a few places I could grab a gin and tonic at?

3) Should i get a drivers license in the UK before moving or is public transport pretty good in Qatar?

Cheers in advance! x

I messaged the OP, but I, too, will be another vegan in Doha soon enough. I'd love to hear from other Doha vegans!

To be honest, I'd advise any single lady who'd like to move down here NOT TO!

I have been here for a long time (and by that, I mean long) and I must say the experiences are horrible!

Single ladies are very vulnerable and easy targets by the silly married ones who are insecure and think all single girls, unmarried, are all out to hop on their husbands. If you have to move, Dubai is a more relaxed, unassuming place to start your life afresh. Move here if you have a family and / or friends that supports and defends you come rain or sunshine! It is a crazy society! Everyone knows everyone!

P.S:. I like the serenity and the beautiful view of the city at night from the Corniche, by the way.

were will you be working?

have you any idea on what you are coming to with regards to journalism?

I am in journalism here... is this your first job? Not to interfere or anything, but you need to rethink working as a journalist in Qatar, especially if its your first job.... if you ever go back to mainstream journalism in your own country, you will be in for a huge shock...

Thank you so much for the heads up on the vegan issue, Xena! It seems frivolous but was actually one of my bigger concerns lol.

Missteacher- I got a journalism job. Glad to hear you’re loving it. I’m hoping I’ll have the same experience!

Thanks again to everyone for their advice and warm welcomes!

Will just use that for now, shall we?

Shoprite and MegaMart have a large variety of vegan goods, from Tofu, to Vegan burgers... have two vegan friends, so pretty up on where to go:-)

Yes, unfortunately, welcome also, too the world of desperate men, that is QL... NOT ALL (before some of you jump down my throat) but certainly a large number;-p

You will also be hunted by females, on the prowl;-p Usually in the scheme of 419 emails.... you know the type - Hi, my name is... and I was looking at your profile... type of crap;-p

If you become involved on QL, you can be screened by the QLSG committee, which is lead by our big bad hairy wolf, Darude, and you might be privilaged enough to be invited into the fold...:-)

Come and enjoy the country... Qatar has some fun and adventures, if you are just willing to get out and find it:-)

Definately get a full drivers licence from the UK if yer have time, it is pretty easily converted to the Qatari licence.

You concerns queries most of them already addressed.

So finally just to say Welcome to the Sandpit!

Just another simple advice try another user ID. You can change you ID by send the Moderator another user ID of your choice, they will chnage it for you.

As far as vegetarian/vegan food is concerned, you just have to know where to shop for it. There are some supermarkets that sell vegetarian/vegan items (Lulu Hypermarket, Megamart). As for restaurants, especially Indian food is perfect and there is lots of that here in Qatar.

Tofu, is surely available here in any supermarket...

Thank you for all the Reponses and the warm welcomes! I’m still waiting on my visa to arrive so I think I’ll take the advise given here and get my license pronto whilst I wait.

@speedy Sid- You’re not too wrong about the messages. Many of which are providing a hell of a lot of entertainment right now lol.

@Patrick- I really hope the ‘xxx’ does not come across as some sort of invitation to say that I’m for it haha. It’s simply a lack of username creativity :-/

Thanks again!

You will be served with Alcohol in all star hotels even if you dont have residency permit. But you should show your passport at the time of entry and you have to take a membership (In some hotels only)

As said above definitely get your license before you arrive, as this is not the place to learn! Taxis are cheap, and I've never met anyone who gave the buses a real go.

Socializing is what you make of it. Culturally local men more lecherous when it comes to single women out--as in if you are out on your own or with other women at night you are clearly up for it. Most expats come with families but there are singles too. Some good bars, several good gyms, but the best times to be had are with a group of friends at someone's home. All the expats have been in your shoes, so they will be welcoming and you'll make friends quickly!

Planning lots of getaway mini-breaks to escape the heat, dust and city will make the transition easier. You close to all sorts of great holiday spots.

If you are living on your own make sure you have safe and secure housing.

Speedysid I am sure you will be the first to send her a PM.

Hi Sarah,

I am a Brit that moved over here 4 weeks ago, and depending who you are working for will depend on what information you will get. For myself, settling in was good as i started with a few people and we socialise a lot, Taxi's are great, Buses not, food shopping is good, and clothes shopping even better....

Nightlife is limited and you cannot get served Alcohol until you have your residence permit.

Where will you be staying?

Let us know when you arrive and join us for nights out...

Andy

How you doin'? :)

Night life here is, well, uhmm, OK i guess. Only bars in hotels serves alcoholic drinks.

It will be easier for you to have one here if you have a driving license in the UK.

Good luck

I can just imagine the plethora of PMs in her inbox right now!!

Settling here is fine, though you gotta adjust to the weather here!

And get a driver's license- pronto!

It is not Ibiza. Socialising is usually with friends at clubs or at home. If you're female, then no shortage of "suitors" :o)

Public transport exists, but better to take taxis.

Welcome and good luck.

Soya Milk - tofu widely available :) Indian restaurants have fine veggie food and so do others!

For sure learn to drive in UK.

Night life is what you make of it and when you get a group of friends you will be fine :)

nightlife is pretty dismal though you can have your favourite drinks in some limited places. get a lisence for sure, if you don't have your own vehicle here, you are like blind and on the streets.

rest is fine.

Vegetarian is easy

Public transport is not dependable and waiting for a bus in 40-50+C and what seems like 150% humidity is not fun. (and that's what it will be for 5 months of the year). Get a driving license in UK then you won't have to go through what passes for driving school here (which in many cases is a money grab)

Nearly all 5* hotels have bars and once you have a residency permit you can get an alcohol license (provided your employer gives you a letter allowing you do so).

i'm a vegan. Do local supermarkets stock things like soya milk and tofu? and would i be hard pressed to find vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurants?
