My wife and I are planning to move over from Reston, Virginia; that's in the Washington DC metro area; to Doha. I just had a quote from a moving company for way over what I can afford. Can anyone here give me some advice on how to get some of our books and furniture over without having to sign ove our souls?

thank you

Sweety 2008,

I have not finalized anything yet.

Do you have any suggestions. I need to finalize our move for sometime in April and May.

Hello,

I am wondering if there is anyone who can provide me with any information on freighting  stuff from UK (London) to Qatar (Dukhan).

Good experience with any freighting companies?  Are there any freighting companies who collect and deliver "door to door"?  Cost of freighting, perhaps per kg etc.  Any information will be very appreciated.

 Many thanks

My wife, daughter and I will also be moving there soon....we are from Washington State.

We were also planning on having me show up 1 month early to get everything set up....

Maybe we can throw some ideas around and help each other find the best accomodations

Think2, thank you for your insight. I am still looking around. Maybe though the best option would be to put everything here in storage and come with a couple of suitcases.

i'll probably be doing that sometime in the middle of february. As my wife is to follow me in a month or so from then, this will give us enough time to see how the situation develops.

thank you again

Hi,

I did what you are planning last september, but from a different origin (HK). My little pieces of experiences:

1) Use seafreight as books are very heavy. If you use airfreight, agent will charge you based on volumatric weight, which takes cargoes' sizes into account. This weight is usually higher than the actual weight. Giving you a rough reference, I had around 500 books and magazines to move here, and my agent estimated the weight was 400kg. (P.S. origin and destination charges for airfreight are charged based on weight).

2) If you use seafreight, agency would charge you a min ocean freight. It should be 150 cubic feet. You have to pay the charge even if your cargoes are less than this volume. For household, this volume is a lot, so if you really want to move your furniture, it actually does not cost you extra. (original and destination charges are per shipment). Also giving you a rough estimate, I shipped my 500+ books/magazines, 5 pieces of furniture and all my kitchen utensils here, and it only filled around 1/2 of the min volume.

3) It took my cargoes around 1.5 months to arrive here. The original schedule was only 3 weeks but they kept rolling over my shipment in Dubai, causing the delay.

Of course, if your company pays for the frieght, then you do whatever your company allows.

My Advice , don't send furniture - buy here or rent house fully furnished.

Books and other things do not send as Air Freight.
