Al Khor for NON gas/AKIS employee

Hi,

I have been searching, but haven't found the answers I'm looking for.

What is Al Khor like for an Australian Family (Mum, Dad and a 1 year old girl)? I am not employed by rasgas, qatargas or AKIS, so unfortunately we can't live in the community.

The main things I need to know are:

AKIS do not accept any children of non-employees, are there any other western syllabus Nurseries in Al Khor? What are the approximate fees

Does the rest of al Khor have a large western community? As I do not work in the gas industry, it may take some time to get invited to the community.

Finally I will be commuting daily from Al Khor to West Bay, which I understand will be around 30 minutes, is that about right?

Thanks

There are quite a lot of new villas in al khor. I'm not exactly sure how much the rent is, but roughly 7k a month is reasonable for a small 3 bedroom villa in a compound. Another option is to rent in al-dakhira which is 10mins from al-khor with cheaper rent. Al-dakhira is actually closer to al khor community than al-khor, but doesn't have any facilities except for a small Meera (shopping centre).

That's a big help, I'm not sure where honeybunch got the 50 minute drive from, but I have heard around 30 minutes from al khor to west bay from a few people now.

If anyone can shed some light on fees for Childcare centres in Al Khor, I'd be very grateful

Cheers,

Hi Ummsumaya. Thanks for the info. That's very informative. You're saying the school comes out to be about 90K qr a year then? How is the Compass school rated?

Can you indicate the housing rental prices in Al Khor please? A compound villa 4 bedroom with some recreational facilities?

Thanks.

Wokka, I've lived in Al Khor, in the community, for nearly 3 years now. Schooling is an issue. AKIS does accept non-rasgas/qatargas students, but you might have to be put on a waiting list. Other english schooling options include Qatar Academy and Compass. Fees are roughly 30kQR a term - with 3 terms in a year.

There are also a couple of child care centres - but I can't recall their names.

The Al Khor Mall is now open. This has Lulu plus other shops: splash, bodyshop, city lifestyle, mothercare, claires, crono etc...

Activities wise there is only really the Mall, but don't forget City Centre is only about 30 mins away - as is West Bay.

Hope that helps. Good luck and Welcome to Al Khor!

Wow, may I ask where in Doha that would take 50 minutes to travel from Al Khor? I heard new Lulu is opening up there now. Are there any other malls/shoppings in the area? I'm thinking of getting a villa up there and travel south to Umm Salah. How long would it take?

Thx.

In 2006 i moved from Doha to Khor....frankly there r no facilities to live in Alkhor...not a single good school available...AKIS u can get admission but there would be a long waiting list...my hubby is working in ras laffan. Its difficult to travel everyday n then again face the traffic in Doha. It takes more than 50 minutes. No good school so i travel from Khor to Doha every day with my son.
