Alico investment Vs Alico Life Insurance

I am about to put some amount into American Life Insurance Company, for a short term investment (3 years). Some people have recommended instead going in for a combination of life insurance and investment(10 years). Does anybody have some experience to share, before I take the plunge?

I don't have experience with the other schemes, but I am very unhappy with Alico medical insurance.
