you just need to install skype..SIM is not required for using US number as the US number is only connected using skype software. SIM would be only required to use phone internet if you are using skype on your phone. for pc/laptop, just install skype and you can use US number without SIM.

Really informative Zain... :)

can you tell me this, is this the skype number only or there's a sim accompanied with it too?

i forgot to mention that when you purchase a US number on skype, all incoming calls are free. so when someone calls from Pakistan you can keep talking for hours and it will cost you nothing for the incoming (just keep track of your internet balance) and less than Rs.2 per minute in Pakistan and even less when subscribed to ptcl international package

skype is free and purchasing a US number on skype is $60 (QR.220) just once per year. you will end up paying more than this amount per month so consider this peanuts

also, when you purchase a US number on skype, you can configure skype to show your caller ID of the US number so you can give a missed call to a Pakistan phone number and they will call you back..might sound complicated but you can get up and running within minutes!

you can do all of this on your laptop or phone (if you can install skype on your phone). i prefer it on phone as you then have 2 numbers online all the time wherever you go and always in touch with your family back home

and..if they install skype on their PC then they dont even have to pay for ptcl calls (now i feel like working for skype marketing..lol)

ufone roaming costs close to Rs.250 per minute for incoming and outgoing calls so avoid roaming at all cost.

get qtel or vodafone (not much of a price different when calling Pakistan) but vodafone gives you 2gb internet package for just QR.100 which will benefit you..keep reading. you can purchase a sim by showing your passport and visa. calling from pakistan to qatar is cheaper than calling vice-versa.

when i initially landed here i paid some really hefty bills for phone calls here and in pakistan but now with skype its almost free.

best choice is to install skype on your phone and purchase a US phone number and it will cost not more than Rs.2 for calls from Pakistan. you can get international package on your ptcl phone in Pakistan and get 500 minutes free every month. vodafone 2gb internet package would be more than enough for a whole month or even more. skype uses less than 20mb per hour for voice calls so 2gb is like over 100 hours.

and yeah..welcome to doha :)

Dont even think about roaming, UFone is comparitively cheaper But its still expensive...

For you, i guess Vodafone SIM, would be a good choice... Cuz international call to Pakistan would be cheaper. more over, for the prepaid sim, you can load a 50 riyals card that gives you 75 MB of internet usage. Facebook is free on Vodafone.

I came to Doha 2 week backs, i had checked mobilink ufone, warid and telenor. Its not worth it, roaming is too expensive... better 4u to buy the Qtel Hala prepaid at the Airport Arrivals. Just bring a passport copy and in 5 minutes u will be online. Its cheap and better solution. ROaming is a rip-off, avoid it. Regards

It will be very costly. Why not to use Qtel's Prepaid Hala-Package??
