Bringing in US beef with us when we come to Qatar

By zmountainman

We enjoy BBQ and have a beef ranch in the US and wonder if we would be allowed to bring in a few choice steaks in our baggage when we first come to Doha in the Fall.

And I am aware of the results of lost luggage and what happens to frozen meat in a hot suitcase.....;-).

Thanks for any info.

Seriously, the best bet is to check with the airline (to see if you can bring it) and Qatar customs (to see if its allowed if you can bring it into the country).

You MAY not bring beef into the country.

ESPECIALLY US beef.

Qatar has strict health regulations and does not allow US beef to be brought in due to previous hazards. Only cleared meat can be brought it.

I would advise that you don't chance it either as the fine is 10,000 QR and/or a forced return back to your country.

edit: I should correct myself in case of any confusion, you CAN bring specially sealed (air tight and from a known company) meat. (not Pork products though)

Dry ice is permit on the aircraft, but you have to contact the airline directly. Due to the limit quantity (weight) of dry ice per each passenger. Also, it must be properly pack to have some ventilation.

This information is from an airline dangerous goods booklet and I'm also working for an airline. Have a nice trip to Doha! I'm moving there myself to join Qatar Airways in October...

I have had Montana beef and it is delicious!( I went to University for a year in Montana) But as advice to you, I wouldn't bring the beef over. It is going to be more hassle then it is worth, as you can get beef just as good in Doha.

You will probably have a lot to deal with during your move here, so I really suggest that you don't bother with the beef. you might get held up at customs and it might get lost of spoiled in the heat. I know you want to have good BBQ's but you really can buy beef here just as good.

Plus, you can always have some family send it to you after you settle in.

To clear up the confusion, we were in Qatar last week for an interview and visit and now are returning in a couple of months.

With regard to the Mystica's comments regarding the fact that there is a good supply of beef produce in Qatar. I don't want to sound pretencious, but, Montana grass fed beef has a special flavor. If you are interested, let me know and we will have you over for a BBQ.

Thanks for the advice.

You do not need to bring any beef here! they have all sort of beef at the supermarket from various country! so why bother? you're meet can give you problem, you can get salmonella poisoning when you reach here! as the meat is been defrosted for a long time you know what I mean? Don't worry! food is great here too! Just to remind you we don't live in a tent here! Qatar is a very modern country and Qataris make all the effort to keep their foreigners happy here!;-)

yes, I just looked it up a while ago - I'm not experienced in transporting food lol

Looks like the airlines just don't like dry ice. I was probably thinking of plants and suchlike which could bring pests into a country.

Apologies - it's just I probably wouldn't think about bring a pack of meat with me :D

When I lived in Qatar people regularly brought in their favorite foods including meat and seafood that you cannot find in Qatar. The only thing banned is pork and alcohol.

Your profile says you are in Qatar, but you say you are coming here for the first time from the US?

Whatever, I seriously suggest you contact the airline you are flying with. Dead meat in a suitcase? I may be wrong but I doubt it would be allowed but, then, what do I know ...

Diplomatic Pouch may get away with it :D

Let me know how you get on ....
