First impressions
Finnaly arived in Doha two days ago and i managed to make some first impressions.
The climate is perfect in this time of year, warm and hot, allmost too hot :)
Traffic is terribile, traffic jams , unpolite drivers and lack of driving knowlege and curtosy.
Gas is cheap and that is a good thing, but i noticed that most of the qataris are driving their cars vith plastc still on their seats and interior, not to mention the sellers stickers with old car price and barcode, i mean it's hularious, like they want everyone to know that they bought their car a year ago, they remind me on a situation when some pore people earn money reallly fast and then starts to bragin about it waving around with money in their hands. I went crazy when i heard that you have to pay money to make a alcohol licence so u could drink something that you use to drink earlier back home (beer).
I could write more but i'm tired and my working time is over long time ago so i'll continue next time
:))
Arty, out !
@arty, they probably have the barcodes and papers still on their cars because it's so new. You'll see new cars here alot.
People often trade in their cars for the latest model within a year.
I leave the plastic on my back seats for the first 3 months to keep the leather nice and clean. Screw my passengers :P
as for the alcohol license. It's better than before, you couldn't GET alcohol before. The license is a necessity because even with that in your hand you get alot of driving drunks.

welcome to doha arty , and there are quite a few croatians here too
life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......
first things first...clubs are Qatar...not European...hard to compare...and most importantly..do not drink and drive..not even a little bit, unless you want a very quick trip back home to Europe.
Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. --Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)
on the seats actually makes sense..keeps the dust and sand off the fabric...and goodness knows there's enough of that...only thing is I can't imagine how hot that must be while sitting on it in August..you know, right after you get in your car from being in the mall or work all day long...

Thanks everyone for the welcome posts !
Novita 77 hi!, it's is not that much of a cultural shock and i dindn say it is bad here, just diferent, but this is just one of many places and cultures that i have meet in my life, and i dont have big expectations from Qatar, just try to live normal life while working here.
I wonder where is a good place to go out here by night and weekend, and by that i mean the closest to the european going out type you can have ?
Thanks everyone for posting.
To live in Q, first thing you need to do is stop comparing to where you were living. Its only natural as human beings that we do this, but in time you just have to learn to take this place for what it is, regardless of whether you like it or not...
There are things here that annoy the hell out of me but when i was living in Australia, there were things that annoyed me too...
Every country has issues which you may like or dislike, but like Novi said, its culture shock more than anything.
We get used to certain things and way of life in our countries and we have to learn to adapt to the new country. Its a very hard job but if you want to stay sane, go with the flow, and take each day as it comes. Life is what you make of it regardless of location..
Welcome to Q and enjoy....
I completly disagree with your opinion - the first ipresion isnt last impresion , and i comfirmed than numerous times, sometimes first impression can be totaly wrong, that is why it is called the firs impression - outer shell
Who said that i'm judging anyone, it says in the title, firs impressions, not the general opinion, and i ment it regarding the diference from europe.
You got me wrong, totaly, i have just made a comparisment between qatar & eupean cities
welcome to Qatar
welcome to come Qatar Arty ... thanks for posting. Hope you settling down here. If you neve been to the middle east, you will find this place rather a cultural shock for you. But believe me there are places worse than Qatar.
At least you still can get booze ... you go to Kuwait the country will be totally 'dry'.
Dont build your expectation too high , take it living here as an experience then you would be ok.
and sometimes they're more "on the spot" than the impressions that we have after having lived somewhere for a while.
When I lived in Buenos Aires, it was the long-termers and the lifers who proclaimed Buenos Aires to be the safest city they'd ever been in. . .never mind that they had ALL (repeat: ALL) been mugged, carjacked, robbed at gunpoint, been kidnapped (or their kids or someone they knew) or ripped off. . .their new reality was a lifetime in Buenos Aires and they were determined to think the best of it.
I love reading first impressions, so keep 'em coming Arty.
Expat Sueño

you forgot to say or maybe you have not noticed that they leave plastic on their cell phones too.... hehe .
to me, it is surprising that you judged the society (regardless how right or wrong , but you reached some conclusions) just in two day???..you must be something?
it may be a possiblity that you brought lot of good thoughts and stuff with you that helped you judging it in 2 days...
i am an expatriate, and i dont agree with your judgement... may be i am not as sharp as you are...because i cant judge a society in two day time...
and you stated all what you wrote as first impressions... i wonder, where you will end...
enjoy your stay...
When you're through changing, you're through.
welcome to the hole ... if you cant beat them here well i will say dont join them either. people are a bit weird here, so dont worry we are used to seeing all you are just noticing........
