I thought I'd throw all those words up there for fun!!! It's hard to wrap my head around all this housing stuff and it makes me feel :-(

What is a girl to do when she is not Indian, Pinoy (what is that?), Kabayan (what is that?), Philipino, or a bachelor (okay, I'm a bachelorette!)?

I've only been here 2 weeks, almost 3, and don't have my bearings as yet. I have an idea of what areas I'd like to live. Should I just drive around randomly looking for "For Rent" signs? And then just walk in? Is that possible?

I tried phoning a few places but the people I got didn't speak English very well, and I don't speak whatever languages they spoke (not just Arabic). Someone referred a website which looked all professional. I contacted them a couple of days ago and haven't heard back. Is that typical? Don't people want my $$$?

Alright, have a fabulous weekend if it's a weekend for you!!!

Beela - have you found a place yet?

Gulf times does come in English and Thursdays is especially good for ads for apartments etc.

We just went through the same hassle as you.

You said Ezdan sucks - you'll find that on most compounds and suites someone on Qatar living will say it sucks. Ezdan is very reasonably priced, has good facilities and you'll meet lots of people - it might be worth a look?

We didn't move in there, because it was not right for us. There's tons of other apartments in West Bay (if that is where you want to be). I seen a whole bunch in the past few weeks. Drop me a line if you'd like my opinion on some of those.

Just a word of caution, be careful here. Woman who are on their own are targets and very vulnerable to attack from men, Arab and otherwise. DO NOT GO by yourself to view apartments. I would strongly recommend using a reputable agent through Homes to Rent or Apollo or someone. I don't mean to scare you, but never forget that you are in an Arab country, that women on their own who fall into a bad situation are considered to have brought it on themselves. We have no embassy here yet. Please be very careful. Never go in an elevator alone with a male. Never meet with men under any pretense by yourself or otherwise leave yourself open to attack.

I have worked in Arab countries for a long time now and have personally had a couple of close calls. Protect yourself by not putting yourself in vulnerable situations.

Just friendly words of advise.

I have read your response and couldn't agree more with most on the points you made. Its is a matter of education and yes I have dealt with and deal with many proffessional men on a daily basis. I am myself a proffessional in the Energy business. All the men whom i work with are respectful, kind, considerate and dignified and they are of all nationalities including Qatar.

I feel bad that my comments were taken so badly when my only intention was to enlighten Beela to the social do and don'ts here to make sure that she didn't put herself in any questionable situations.

Yes, the west has some lessons that it could take from the middle east. The society in the America's and Europe have become demoralized and socially corrupt. I cant argue with that. But to say there is no crime or homosexuality here is not quite true, in fact I suspect homosexuality is as prevalent here because of the restrictions on male female interaction. Its only hidden because its illegal.

As for crime I do have one questions for you. I have noticed as have many others that there is very little crime reported in the Gulf Times or the Pennisula, but I hear, and correct me if I am wrong, that in the Arabic version of same its all there. Is this true? Why the black out in English paper then if so. We all know that Qatar is not crime free, not society is without it.

I have enjoyed your responses to my questions and I truly appreciate your insight into Arab culture. I hope to learn more about it as time passes for me here in the Gulf.

Best Regards

Halls in this country are living rooms, not hallways as we would think of them lol. I can imagine your frustration as we all go through it here when we first arrive. Call "Homes to Rent" or Al Asmak or Appollo, tell them what you want and see if they have anything. If they do an agent will come round and take you to view. I don't know what your budget. You mentioned that your working Abu Hamour which I think is in the industrial area? Do you have a car yet?

Keep in touch. PS. There is a Canadian Ball on May 29th this year I think at the Ramada. Tickets are supposed to go on sale at Villagio at Virgin book store this weekend.

>Can your sister marry who she wants, is she allowed to move freely in society without covering and escort.

>If the answers are yes then I have the most respect for you.

THE ANSWER is simply "YES". this a truth and without going in personal details , it is my sisters' free will to do whatever they want under the frame of religion.- also without going in debates of some religions postulates coz these differ from one to other according in what he/she believe beside this is out of discussion scope- , the matter of religion-related issues should not be discussed here . but i can proudly say YES of course my sisters can do by their free will and all of them without exception were married to men they loved. and keep in mind that NOW and Tomorrow are always another moments. so present is different from the past.

Other than warning beela based on personal perception or previous bad experience happened to you under un-normal conditions , you can give the words based on some more professional ways as to divide people based on their educational backgrounds. YES I merely believe that Educational background make difference when dealing with people regardless of their nationality.

Without offending any person , Let me ask you, did you face an educated man in Arab world with that attitude you are mentioning, ? most of stories you are mentioning are related to drivers, and publics and in Arab world you must know that these jobs usually occupied by less-educated people. I know this -sometimes- is not a healthy cultural environment but anyway this some kind of truth I must admit.

Moreover , if you want to go in surfing the internet and find some statistics for how the violence against woman is, I believe that western has the highest ratio regardless of what laws you are mentioning. Also let’s agree that Western is more open in woman-related cultures than Arab world which yields a lot of bad effects , for example in Belgium you can see a semi-naked (unless we say totally naked) woman standing in lingerie shop frontage for live show, which is decreasing the value of woman to get her as model without soul or body-respect, which you cannot find it in Arab world.

Another story , issues like gays and lesbians is not much and hidden in Arab world , not like USA. Accidents like pregnancy without marriage in secondary schools are not here in Arab world, in UK this issue is a headache. Additionally you will not find an establishment for porno movies productions in gulf .

When talking about moral and ethical related issues, I think Qatar would win. But when you are talking about the work & Professionality cultural difference. We can find a lot of debates.

FYI, I was working in UK, France, USA and some of African countries for long period of time but for me I would prefer so much to stay and live in gulf.

You obviously didnt read my posts fully, and if you had you wouldn't be so defensive. I apologize if I have offended your sensibilities.

My last post was simply made in reponse to a direct questions that I was asked by another QL member.

What is your problem? I am not attacking anyone, or generalizing, unfortunately you have obviously taken offense. you took my post out of context. Do you have a problem with me cautioning women against letcherous men? If it was an white cab driver who tried to grope me I would have said dirty honky, but it wasn't and in that particular instance it was an Arab.

If you read my post further you would have also seen that I acknowledge that there are lots of great men out there who are; polite, respectful and dignified.

Oh and by the way, YES, YES and YES, I have. I have been groped by dirty Arab cab drivers in Azerbaijan, Suni (spelling) arabs and felt up in elevator and on the bus by complete strangers (men). Arab men think they are supreme, and objectify women, they do not see women as human beings or their equals which we are and more.

Can your sister marry who she wants, is she allowed to move freely in society without covering and escort. If the answers are yes then I have the most respect for you. If the answer is no get out of the dark ages, women make up 51% of the population are productive and can make huge contributions to society beyond the house, bedroom and kitchen.

Giving words of Caution is to empower women to protect themselves, not to insult men as there are lots of good men out there, respectful, kind and dignified..

My intent was not to offend anyone but to offer Beela some wise words of caution. Your right caution should be exersiced in all countries. But there are laws to protect women and prosecute men for sexual assault in western countries. Those laws don't exist here or if they do the man's word will always be take over a womans just because the society is framed that way.

Your right bad things can happen to anyone anywhere. However, its a known fact that some religious zelots teach that women have no soul and that they are there to temp men, which is a load of bs and amounts to a cop out for men not having to be responsible for thier own actions and behaviours.

So I say western women must protect themselves here in Arabia, never trusting men that they don't know and never putting themselves in situations that are questionable even with men they do know.

If something were to happen the fact is it would be considered the woman's fault, regardless of what happened, because the consensus would be the woman shouldn't have put herself in such a situation in the first place. Lets look at the 75 year old women who was just jailed in Saudi for taking bread from her nephew and a stranger. Lets look at the young woman who was violently raped last year and then she and her lawyer were both jailed for wasting the courts time. Yes these occurances were in Saudi, but lets face it Saudi is just across the border and while things have progessed here, they haven't progressed that much and I for one wouldn't want to have to test it.

All I am saying is that Beela is new and may not be aware of the social do's and don't and I wanted to make sure that she thinks twice and doesn't put herself in any potentially harmful situations.

Hi,

I am also from Calgary, and came here 16 months ago on my own. Your right, take things one day at a time and try not to get stressed. I personally rented through homes to rent, and have been pleased living in Al Dafna in a one bedroom FF flat with all utilites inlcuded and a pool for 9000.

My only advise would be to make sure that anything that you want them to do in the apartment have them do it and check that its done before you sign. there is no after sales service with homes to rent.

Be careful if you go through the paper, lots of scams and scam artists out there. Send me an email anytime if there is anything that I can do to help you settle in.

Welcome to Doha.

Well I had to go thru a similar time Beela when I came here a few weeks ago. I had moved from Washington DC to Dubai and in two months had to move to Doha. I could not find a half decent place until I found a decent one close to Ramada Junction. Depending on your budget you can find some really decent deals these days. However, stay away from certain areas. You can email me on [email protected] and I can give you a briefing, if you need. I did see a place the other day that is brand spanking new, has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, tiny kitchen, living room, unfurnished, with a cockroach. I've never seen a cockroach before...it was dead.

The guy didn't speak English and I didn't speak his native language, but I know that utilities are included, and I *think* wireless internet.

It was in the Bin Omran (???) area and the driver said down that road over there was the Corniche. Seemed pretty close to things.
