Getting around Qatar?
By tahaqureshi •
Hey guys, I'll be arriving in Doha and staying at the Sheraton. Any ideas whats the best method of transport to WCMC-Q (Cornell)? I'm hearing about a lot of road trouble, so I dont want to be late for an interview.
intercontinental hotel has their own lemo service. they also have the map. just tell them when you want to go. they can arrange a pic and drop for you where ever in qatar.
i've used this facility when i stayed at intercontinental so it's test don't worry!!
The roads do not have a problem they are excellent with all the lanscaped sidewalk...oops centrewalk. The traffic could hold you up a little. Literally every employed person in Doha has his own vehicle....or so it seems.
Hireing a chaffeur driven rent a car would be the first option (they are there at the airport itself after you come out with your baggage on the trolley).
Bullying any of your known / unknown contacts to drive you would be the next option. (usually they dont mind due to the non-exixtance of the Transport system.
Asking some of your known / unknown contacts on this site to give you the number of their favourite drivers would be the most economical & sensible option.
As for other means of transport they are present in theory. (if there were any we wouldnt have our own private favourite drivers). But when you wait for a Taxi/cab you wont get any ...or at least in the first 30minutes. There are less than 2000 taxies in the whole of Qatar (they wouldnt even be able to cater to 1/10th of the customers in CityCentre Mall) and it is called a "Transport System" here.
Then finally you have the option of travelling in the Airconditoned Merc-Benz Buses which charges you QR2 for travelling inside Doha & QR5 for travelling to Khor, Duhkan, Wakrah etc. These buses take 30 minutes to travel a distance you could travel in 5minutes by car. Its actually excellent for sight-seeing. You could travel the whole of Qatar in about 30 Q-Riyals, literally.
Dont forget to pick up some of the darkest sunglasses on your way here....then you wont feel the heat much.
