Leaving the UK

Hi all. I am coming to Qatar with the better half in August. We struck a deal - I get a job and arrange the move, she arranges our wedding. I got the easy job. To be honest, I thought she arranged venue, reception and most importantly, food. I was so wrong! It should also be romantic apparently. And have flowers, cake and a speech. And I love a good speech. So after the speech, if she hasn't filed for divorce by the end of it, we head off to Qatar.

Anyways, back on topic...what do I need to sort out and which loose ends must I tie before heading out?

I have considered the usual cancelling the mobile contract, insurance, teaching union, BT (I hate BT with a passion), talking to the tax man, saying hi to my pension people, selling the car (Renault Clio 1.2V 04 plate if anyone is interested!).

But have I missed anything glaringly obvious? More than likely yes. Any pointers???

Cheers.

Just a couple of other things:

Sort out you NI contributions - you can continue to pay them monthly!

If you are renting your property let your insurance and mortgage people know.

If you have any medical issues, then get your GP to do you a print of medication and frequency...trust me it helps here!

Most of all come with a positive attitude and you will both enjoy it here.

I suggest you hold your brakes....As suggested, come over and have a look with your wife. Life is fantastic out here. It won't harm to explore first.

Furniture, you might find a furnished place and it is just as easy to buy your furniture in Qatar or even from Dubai. If you bring your furniture with you ...your options are limited!

Make sure your contract provides accommodation allowance...a good one.

All the best and congratulations.

the list is potentially endless depending on circumstance. have just move myself recently and, for example, if you own somewhere you need to get an overseas landlord reference from the taxman and organise letting moving forwards, if you're in rented then you need to make sure that you're lease gets sorted at the correct time. You may need to think about shipping of furniture, you need a different P45 if you leaving your current job and emigrating and it's useful to get things like evidence of how many years no claims you have from your car insurance. You'll need passport photos in abundance, although these are better sorted out here, and if you get the chance to visit before coming out you'll realise that if you want to furnish your own place you'll need to buy tasteful things in the UK, export them and claim the tax back as the choice out here is somewhat "limited". Make sure you enrol on the frequent flyer programme of whomever you are flying with so that you don't kick yourself later. Ever educational document you've ever encountered may well need to be certified/stamped in many ways, so dig out what you have early and ask your Uni for anything you are missing well in advance so that it doesn't delay matters. There'll no doubt be countless other things, but everything is easily manageable so no need to stress (I managed to get it all organised in a couple of weeks so you have way longer to get your ducks in a row).

Good luck and look forward to seeing you both here in August (probably no need to pack the jumpers in hand luggage for that time of year!).
