look, life in Calgary is not more expensive than Doha, although certain commodities are.

Calgary, like all of Canada, operates on the market system and we have no imported slave labour or petrol subsidies. Therefore, everything is based on market forces.

1000 per month for a good apartment equals 3500 QR, and I ask you to find similiar, good accomodations in Qatar for that price, its impossible. Transportation in Calgary is comparible in cost to any western city, and all you have to do is live near a LT station,,,and there are over 2000 kilometers of bike lanes throughout the city. As for fast food,, so what? you shouldn't be eating that stuff anyway. We can it the "Fat Tax". And as for the status of a Canadian educational institution, well they are just fine. One thing you fail to note, and perhaps you do not realize it, but when a Canadian puts his papaers in from of a prospective employer we often get top billing simply because its Canadian, and the "can-do" philospphy we often exibit,,,

I won't say that Canada and Candain institutions are the best, but they are certainly better for you in the long run than most.

I forgot to mention, living expenses in Calgary are VERY HIGH -- often higher than Doha. Toronto and Montreal and the east coast are much, much cheaper.

If you want to live near SAIT, in the North Hill area, expect to pay CAN$1000 a month for a basic one-bedroom. Gas is more expensive, taxi services are even worse than Karwas, public transit takes an hour to go anywhere that a car would take 10 minutes. Food is insanely expensive. $60 meals are common, and a cheap meal -- say a over-the-counter fallafel or something -- would cost $10.

What is your idea? DO YOU THING IT IS NOT GOOD PLACE TO STUDY ?

all one has to do is check the status of the university where you want to study,,,its quite simple. And Calgary has connections to the petro community second only to Houston. So I would say that its a very good place to study.

if it weren't for a number of other factors, I would certainly be back there,,,,,its certainly a better city than Doha.

Hi,

I was born in Calgary and lived there until moving here in March.

There is the misconception it is a "cowtown". The only times you see people in cowboy hats will be during the 10 days of Stampede, if you're out of the city and actually on a farm or something, or when there are tourists around.

The amount of sunlight we get is amazing, and in the summer when the sun sets close to 10pm, it is still light outside 30 minutes later (not like here...sun sets and it's dark in 5 minutes!)

Sometimes when it snows, it melts the very next day, and sometimes it doesn't but the sun is out and it's warm.

It is what you want to make of it, like any city. If you think it will be a boring place to live, then it will be. You're going for school, learning new things, making new friends, experiencing a new place...there will be lots to see and do.

Yes it was 30-something degrees in September, but ONLY for a few days and it made HUGE news in the local media because of how unusual that was. Two weeks later it snowed.

Calgary was all right, it is a bit sprawling like easylaugh says, but there's lots of young people and if you're the outdoor type LOTS of outdoor attractions. You'll enjoy it.

I was in Calgary on Sept 20th or so and it was 34 degrees.

calgary is not infested like the Lower Mainland, or Toronto, or Montreal, or even Halifax for that matter, with all sorts of low life...

If you want a good, clean city to study in and advance your career, Calgary is a fine option.

The favourite saying I have heard in Calgary is "Calgary has done right by me". Thats a pretty good thing these days.

I have lived in Calgary for the past 10 years and it is not the funnest place to live in Canada. You have to have a car. Night life ends at midnight. It's a sprawling suburban city. It's conservative (by Canadian standards), family-oriented and quiet. SAIT itself is a pretty decent school and located in a good spot, but if you are a city slicker, this is not the place for you. On the other hand, if you love the mountains and outdoors (kayaking, skiing, that sort of thing), then you would love it.

Oh and I should mention the weather drops to -40 C (so very opposite of the Qatar) a few weeks during the winter. It's hard to explain just how cold that is, but I can tell you -- stay outside for more than 10 minutes without a proper jacket, scarf, mitts and tuque, ear-covering and you will freeze -- literally. Also, it starts to get cold around the end of September (Zero to 10 C) and you will not get to see summer till mid July. My birthday is in May and almost every year it snows that week. Hell, you can even experience hail (falling ice the size of golf balls)in JULY!

The warmest it gets is around 25 to 27 C and that only happens maybe two weeks of the year. A warm day in Calgary is around 15 C.

The city also promotes cowboy and country culture, which is not my thing. Everywhere you go, there are silly people wearing cowboy hats, pretending to be western. And for 10 days of the year, all you see is "YAHOO!" signs on stores, people dressed as cowboys/cowgirls, and country music blasting everywhere... URGH.

Calgary is an absolutely stunning city. Very fun and friendly in my opinion. You are right at the foot of the Rocky Mountains which are one of nature's most magnificent creations. There is a lot to do in the summer. You will really love the Calgary Stampede I'm sure. Have you ever seen a rodeo? Guys riding big angry bulls risking their lives !

It is cold in the winter, but it is much like air conditioning and the heat in Doha. You go from a heated home to a heated car to a heated school or workplace.

Youre going to have a fabulous time ! Dont forget to make sure and see a professional hockey game live. If you can go when the Flames play the Oilers or the Canucks.
