By malinis

If you are planning to come to Qatar and want to drive without going through driving school classes and test at traffic department in Qatar, then follow the following steps:

1. Take your Malaysian driving licence and get it translated into Arabic and English at Malaysian National Institute of Translation, Ministry of Education, Section 10, Wangsa Maju, 53300 Kuala Lumpur.

2. Then take these papers to Consular Section, Wisma Putra, Putrajaya and get them chopped there.

3. Thereafter take the same to the Embassy of Qatar,
Ampang Hilir(Parallel to Jalan Ampang), Behind Great Eastern Mall and get it endorsed.

4. Go to any approved clinic/driving school with your passport photo in Doha duly authorised to carry out drivers eye test for trafiic department.

5. Take a NOC from your employers(sponsor) in arabic addressed to traffic department that you want to apply for driving licence.

6. take copy of qatar ID with original also and one passport size photo(blue background)

7. Meet Asst Manager or Manager on 1st Floor at Traffic Department HQ, Madina Khaliffa, Doha.

8. Driving licence is yours all malaysians.

Hi Tiru - did you manage to convert your license? It is difficult to do the conversion now. I tried but have failed so far. I even spoke to the captain but you have to take an Arabic speaker with you or at least someone from your HR. I am trying to locate a PRO who will be able to help me as this seems to be the only way now. I have not been able to secure a PRO for now.

One question, is it for sure all Malaysian can convert or it is still depends on the mood of the Manager/ Assistant Manager at the Traffic Department?

Thanks!

Okay, So maybe I'll send my license back to malaysia and got it translated there with all the stamps and everything..Thank you Begum

I am not sure. Some of my friends who tried from here failed. I think the Qatar Embassy Stamp is important. Just a guess

How about if I do the translations here in the Malaysian Embassy? Will it work? I got all the paperwork done )eye test, NOC letter) except the translations (which I know I can do it in the embassy)

Thank you

I got mine converted yesterday. Follow exactly like what is written by malinis. Thanks malinis. You saved me the hassle of going to classes and test.

By the way: No wasta.. only a arabic speaking friend to help to inquire at the counter. Thanks to my friend too.

Malinis,

Thanks for this piece of advise. I am certainly going to give it a go seeing that I have failed twice and am going back to Malaysia for holidays. just a couple of questions which I hope you can advise :-

1. When you say convert the license to arabic & english, do they actually reproduce your license in those languages or is just reproduced on a piece of paper?

2. Do you have a particular asst manager or manager that you met at the traffic department you can refer to? Also did it go smoothly or was there a lot of convincing to do?

Thanks,

Aziz

Now you tell me... I presume your info is current since you just posted it. I thought we could convert easily before 2005 or 2006 but not anymore. I thought the new regulations were that we had to take lessons and test because we're driving on the opposite side of the road. Malaysia is right hand drive, here left hand drive. But the advantage is that those with a Malaysian driving licence can take the minimum short course of 7 days (including theory on the 1st day). For UAE or USA, no problem, I was told - driving on the same side.

I got my driving licence the hard way, with a particular PO... And had to wait till after Ramadhan too. Sigh!

But thanks for the info. Groundwork must be done in Malaysia before coming, huh?

/Juan, how is the original post great news for Filipinos?
