Moving to Al Khor

Darlington
By Darlington

Hi,

I've just accepted a teaching job at Al Khor International School - British Section. Anyone already there who has the 'low down' on the community especially the accommodation I would be grateful. If anyone has children at the school or works at the school I would love to know what its like.

Thanks

As long as you have visas and family accomodation you'll be just fine. It's Ramadan and you're not coming for a month. Can't imagine anyone in Qatar is thinking about hurrying at this point!

Hiyya, I am expeting to move out to Al-Khor at the end of August, as yet have only received my work visa (no tickets or hint of accomodation at this point either). I am assuming that you have now made your move and are pretty much settled? I am coming over from the UK with family and a little worried that there wont be time to settle in. Did you have good experiences with furniture and stuff around your villa, or should i expect to be sleeping on the floor on the first day?

Your experiences would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi all, I read with interest the above thread. I have been offered an unsolicited TEFL job with the school under very odd circumstances. Just an email exchange, no interview and a requested early arrival. However the school logo is different from that on the website and the email address suffix is a gmail account (very suspicious). It is required that all immigration and visa costs are paid by the applicant up front and I suspect it may be a con to pocket advance payments. I have emailed the proper school email account and await a response.

Has anyone heard of such a scam?

I hope those that expected their tickets/visas are now safely at work in the school.

Hi cyprusgirl

Have you had further news because at the moment I've had nothing about arrival!!

We do get a small relocation allowance but thinking it is only 350qr but could be wrong. Yes we do get a furniture allowance and we get issued a villa - I think married staff at least do! Not sure about single teachers they maybe only get an apartment.

I'm travelling with KLM via Amsterdam and have been quoted Euro180 for my sons guitar as excess baggage!!

Just started packing so am desperately trying to keep things low key!

If you're flying Qatar Air beware of their excess baggage fees. Check before heading to the airport, because they can be extortionate. If so, try a luggage forwarding service or air freight, it will almost certainly be cheaper and will only take a few days to arrive.

Hi guys I am wondering if this years staff will be put n a villa bungalow or an apartment also what furniture there will be ie bed settee as we are only bringing clothes and the laptop!!!!! I think the white goods are there is that right and we get a furnishing allowance is that teachers or just rasgas employees? If I buy excess baggage can I get that back at school with a receipt? half packed now and already 2 suitcases looks like about 66kilos in all and i read we get 46 between us so will be paying at airport methinks. I now know that we get collected and have a meet the buddy breakfast meeting but dont have a buddy still. hence the questions think I was a late interview. I now know I am in year 5 and the head of year was very helpful. She said buddies will take us shopping to furnish the apartment. Is there any outdodr space to have meals or bbq? thanks in advance and see the other newbies at Manchester Airport!!!

Hi Cyprusgirl,

I met up with my buddy on Tuesday and asked the same sort of questions! When we arrive the villas normally have a 'get you by' pack e.g bread, milk etc. Last year there were sheets, duvets etc provided to get you by until the allowance comes through. Towels were not there, however, my buddy said try to just take 1 towel and share it on the first day and then shop. She said towels were cheap and now the new mall is open in Al Khor it is easy to get to. We fly from M'cr what time is your flight?

loads of useful info, it is lovely to hear from someone that is already out there...

I am travelling with my (non teaching)hubby, 13 yr old son (yr9) and 9 yr old daughter (yr 5). We are on the 9:45am flight, so looks like we are flying together. It would be good if we could travel to compound together when we arrive - where ever that may be!

Still can't decide what to ship over, sounds like most of you are starting again over there. Did anyone find out info on planning (KS1)? By the time I was appointed the teachers were on holiday, so haven't been able to update me.

Hello all you newbies to Doha and WELCOME!!!

I am not a teacher but saw your enquiry and thought I would throw my hat in the ring with a bit of info that might help! I live in Doha with my Safety Mgr husband and little Maltese dog Suzie. We are Aussies and have lived here now for 2 and a half years so guess we are pretty used to it now! But we love it!!! So different from home but once you accept that and get on with it, life is good. Hot but good!

At least if you are arriving at the end of August you might miss out on most of the really hot weather. I think today hit 50 as my husband said his car told him it was 46 at around 2pm when he was coming home.... yep it's really hot!!! LOL We hate the cold but love the heat but if you are coming from UK, it will be a bit of a shock I am thinking! But remember - you live in airconditioning, drive an aircon car, teach in an aircon school and shop in aircon, so what's the problem huh?

For you guys, the adventure is just beginning!

I have to say that Qatar Living is great with info about Doha + and Qatar in general - do some searches for anything that you want to know and you can be sure that someone has asked about it and there's answers too.

Hmmm.... 30,000 QR for your furnishing allowance. Sounds a lot but I guess it will depend on what you want in your living quarters my friends.

Before you do any rushing out and buying up furniture though.. please make sure that you look at the FOR SALE classifieds here in QL. Expats advertise their possessions when they are leaving and you can get some really good bargains, so keep an eye on it - even now so you can get an idea of prices!

Surprisingly, there are quite a few places you can buy everything you will need to set up house!

There are several "department-type" stores here that sell stuff... Homes R Us in the Hyatt Plaza, The One (expensive) in Landmark Plaza, and of course Carrefour stores in most of the shopping centres. Lulu is also big and has cheaper things. Ikea hasn't opened yet but I hear it's not far off so you have that to look forward to. The store will be humungous!!!! There are a couple of new shopping centres just opened too - Lagoona and there's a new one out your way but still within Doha territory.

Food is expensive cos it's all imported - you can get both New Zealand and Australian meat here as well as Pakistani and some local. Best steer clear of the last two though - you will see what I mean when you visit - not cut like normal meat IMHO and rather offputting from my point of view. Lots of halal chicken (which means it is killed a certain way according to Islamic law). Most veges and fruit are imported too and usually reasonable quality. Megamart stores are more expensive but the quality of fruit and veges is exceptional. You get what you pay for as usual!

All the little supermarkets dotted around Al Khor and Doha are AMAZING!!!! You might spend hours in them just trying to work out exactly what they stock as there is so much variety crammed into small spaces... they usually sell everything except furniture!

I am sure you will all love Al Khor and make friends easily seeing as you will be living amongst each other. We love the resort there and frequently venture out on a Friday for a good feed and some R&R.

There is also quite a bit to be explored in the surrounding countryside (like old ruins and forts, old style villages, turtles beaching to lay their eggs, different beach spots for bathing and picnicking) and you can drive around the whole of the country in a couple of hours so it is quite tiny - especially compared with what I am used to in Australia!

Anyway folks, I wish you all a very happy time here in Doha. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions and I will try to help.

Kindest regards and GOOD LUCK!

Helen

The HR assistant told me 30,000 QR (I think thats the correct figure) - if so very generous seen as we don't have to buy white goods.

Wow it sounds like you have a busy summer! We are enjoying the weather and generally relaxing before the big move. Thanks for the information about the furniture allowance. I think we may hire a car and start to furnish the house with some savings?

Is your son looking forward to the move? Our daughter will be in year 2. She is looking forward to the adventure with a few nerves!

I also fly on August 31st with my husband and son but we are going via Amsterdam then spending the night in Doha. We are picking up a hire car in Doha on the Saturday before driving to Al Khor.

I am really looking forward to the new challenges of the job but currently my mind is firmly fixed on the summer holidays and my impending M.Ed thesis part 1 which is due before I leave!!!

The guy from housing told me about the furniture allowance getting paid with the salary in September! My buddy also teaches in year 2 as does a previous contact from many years ago. I'm teaching in year 4 but my buddy has a son the same age as my son and they are going into year 7.

Hi Cat_bambi & Cyprusgirl

I've received my e-tickets and work visa but have heard very little about housing. All I know is that teachers are housed on a compound in Al Khor which is 15 mins or so from the community. Also it is villa housing, at least for married teachers like me. Each compound has a pool and clubhouse complete with gym. The villas are furnished with temporary furniture until you get your furniture allowance which I think is at the end of September. White goods are included in the villa - cooker, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer plus possibly a dishwasher but to be confirmed.

Have you had etickets/visa yet? I have accepted Post for Year 1 and think I am flying out on 31st Aug (haven't got tickets yet). Have you heard anything about housing? I'm not sure what to bring - if it's furnished or not?

Hi Cyprusgirl

Are you teaching in the primary or secondary school?

Regarding the e-tickets - I received mine at least 10 days ago plus I've now also received my work visa - so all good to go!

I'm going to be teaching in the primary school and the information has gradually become available albeit slowly. My son is going to be attending the secondary school.

I'm still waiting to hear about housing. Lulu supermarket, there's one in Al Khor, stock a reasonable amount of British foods.

I have read these comments with interest my husband and I are moving over, I am teaching and he will be looking for TA work. We dont have kids so will we be placed in an apartment? Are they furnished at all? I am really excited just waiting for e tickets to be certain we are on our way. I am quite pleased it is quiet as we are used to that and my brother lives in Doha so we can visit when we want a bit more life. What is the beach club dress code can a lady swim and is it tshirt over costume or bikini? I believe no knees or shoulders is the order of the day in public. Do the shops on site stock UK products? What is the cost of restaurants at the cheaper end or on average?thanks guys

British Stream teaching hours are :-

Lower School (Infants) 07.00 - 12.45

Lower School (Juniors) 07.00 - 13.15 (I think this is the finish time)

Upper School (Secondary) 07.00 - 13.20

I do not know if the hours will change in Sepetember.

Hi son, British stream. any ideas about the hours or will they change from Sept. Out of interest, what are the hours for upper and lower school?

Thanks for your detailed response.

By Son70• 25 May 2012 09:15
Son70

The school hours will depend on which school your children will attend, British stream or Indian stream, Upper school or Lower school.

Will you be teaching at the school? If so then as I have previously said teachers are entitled to use the facilities on the Community, there is no charge. There are charges for some activities such as karate, ballet, aerobics classes held at the clubs.

By humus• 25 May 2012 06:08

my kids will be starting AKIS in September. What are the school hours for them and why is there no school website? I find this very surprising...

also, is it free to use the communities facilities or do you have to be an annual member and pay?

Yes I am a teacher at AKIS.

The work life balance is what you make of it really. You will be expected to everything that a teacher would in the UK, in fact I often feel that I do more here than in the UK, with ECA's and meetings.

Teachers are allowed to use all of the clubs and facilities on the Community as well as the Beach Club which is a 20 min drive a way.

The school is being re structured due to GEMS no longer having the contract to manage the school.

The influx of new staff is about the same number of staff that have been recruited to the school in the last few years due to the expansion of the school. So we are used to large numbers of new teachers arriving at the school. No there are hard no feelings towards the new members of staff that have been appointed. You will find that the teachers here are very professional.

Thans for such betailed post son70, its good to have as much of an idea of what to expect as possible.are you at the school too?if so would you consider there to be a decent work life balance?secondly you mentioned the beach club which sounds great but are teachers allowed to use the community club facilities too?al waha club etc?

I was also curious about the restructure at akis school?do u know why this happene and as a consequence do you think existing staff will feel unhappy about a huge influx of new members who are quite probably replacing their good friends etc?

There are 3 and 4 bed roomed semi detached villas available in small compounds in Al Khor, all no more than a 15 minute drive away from the Community where the school is based. If you need any further information, then I suggest that you contact the school. They will be able to give you more information.

There are a few apartments on the Community still allocated to school, but I do not know if they will be allocated to new staff.

The small mall in Al Khor has not opened yet. It is supposed to be going to open in July. ( I will not be holding my breath though, it was supposed to be finished 3 years ago, lol) The atmosphere is good on the compounds as far as I am aware. Other teachers from the school will be living on the compounds, in fact they are teacher only compounds at the moment, with teachers from the British and Indian streams living there along with their families.

In all honesty there are not a lot of things to do in Al Khor, and most people will travel into Doha of a weekend. As a member of the AKIS teaching staff you will be able to use the private beach club, which is about 25 mins drive away from the Community.

Lots of people say that there is nothing to do in Qatar, but really it is what you make of it. You will have to go out and find things to do for yourself. You will probably socialise a lot with the people from the school as you will find that you will have similar interests or children of the same age and so that in some ways makes things easier.

If you look on the TES overseas forum there is a lot of useful information that has been been posted by hippo, if you have not had a look I suggest you do and search for hippo to get the relevant posts.

There are plenty of small shops and small supermarkets in Al khor so if you really don@t want to drive into Doha every week to do your shopping in one of the megastores then you can shop locally.

We're moving on an international school contract too...what kinds of things have you been told that you can do during your spare time? we don't even know where we'll be living yet or anything! We'll be moving with our whole family and our cats too. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Congratulations on getting a job at the school. Are you sure that you will be living on the community though? Most of the teachers recruited last last year in live in compounds in Al Khor and not on the community.

All teaching staff are entitled to use all of the clubs and services on the community. You will be able to swim with your wife and children at any of the clubs on the community. There are Ladies only days at one or two of the clubs but these are on mid week days.

Housing on the community is in older style 3 bed apartments. Off the community, teaching staff are offered villas in compounds with a club house and swimming pool.

Hope this helps.

If you've followed my posts on QL you will see that I give a lot of wary advice and warnings to Westerners coming to work in Qatar. I always give unconditional approval to those coming to work at AKIS and live in Al Khor. Enjoy! And I believe there are a lot of pics on (is it?) Alkhor.com. Anyway, just google alkhor pictures.

Very nice community, the housing is bungalow-style with lots of greenery and flowers. Safe and homey. Good school.
