Moving to Dukhan from UK
I am moving over to Dukhan on a single occupancy as a teacher in August and have heard very mixed things about living in Qatar. I have note been able to get much information bout Dukhan itself. If there is anyone out there with information about a) Living in and general everyda life in Dukhan and b) About working at the school, I would be very grateful.
I have read posts about people wanting information about what to bring over from their country, but not many recent posts from people leaving from the UK.
As a man coming over, I am thinking of bringing my X-Box, maybe my Wii, (as I have heard there can be little to do), and general clothes. My main question is for people who have left from the UK to live in Qatar, (more specifically Dukhan:
"Knowing now what you knew before you got to Qatar/Dukhan, what would you take with you and what would you have done differently?"
I'd appreciate advice on this very much. Thankyou

I am leaving Qatar in July. I would like to take some of my more expensive furniture plus other things that I would like to ship back. Does anyone know of some reputable companies for shipping from Qatar to UK? Thanks in advance for responses.
From what I've heard about Dukhan, it's a lovely place. If you're into sport, there is some very good cycling down there (one of the very few places with 'hills'!) and the sailing is supposed to be excellent there, with frequent dolphin sightings.
I'm in Al Khor, about ah hour North of Doha. I expect it'll be similar to Dukhan in that there is a great community feel here, and it is very easy to escape to Doha for a day/weekend.
There's ome eally good advice on here from everyone. thaks. flor1212, I've already been told that I have buddies assigned for me at my arrival. - Seemed a bit odd at first ut I've grown to the idea. I think I'll probably be doing most weekends in Doha as I am not a drinker. Any information about the school? Thanks again for all the advice.
so I would presume that you will be assigned there.
My one cent, if you are a very sociable person, then, it will be a very hard thing to adjust with. But time will give you chance to adjust accordingly. What is important is finding a buddy who you will be comfortable with, whether same nationality as yours or not. Someone who will be your "guide" at least for the early periods you'll stay here. Unless you are into sports, honestly, I find this place "boring". That's why the pay is high, you are paid for the "boring" times! Lol!
The "singles scene" will be in Doha on the weekends (such as it may be) but remember there is ZERO tolerance for ANY alcohol and driving so it may be difficult to find a ride home!

Hey look, theres arnel worring about someone else's salary again. When will he ever learn, it's not his business what others make. Sad little man.
I don't really ant to talk about salary. I need to know more about the school and lifestyle to expect. Thanks fo rthe welcome
welcome to Qatar Harry!
Hope you enjoy your stay in Dukhan.
What school are you teaching?
How much did they offer you?
Hope you have a nice package.
welcome Harry!
I hope you will enjoy your stay in Qatar.

Thanks fo rall the comments so far, they have been really helpful and in some cases pretty funny. Not too keen on putting on all that weight. Is there such thing as a nightlife in Doha? Also is there any iformation about working for the school itself? Does anyone know any teachers that teach at Dukhan?
Well it's down to individual choice but I prefer Dukhan having worked in both places. I love being 5 minutes from the beach, being able to walk my dogs in peace and having a circle of friends who are all a walk away. The pool and beach clubs are both like good hotel facilities and the drive is more like 40 minutes to Doha. Since I arrived here there has been huge growth, now having 2 supermarkets, McDonals, Domino pizza and Gloria Jeans and a decent computer shop and pharmacy. Obviously living in a close knit community can be tiresome at times but I appreciate weekends in Doha but am always pleased to be home and love the fact that we are not at the mercy of unscrupulous landlords who can change rents or give you notice. Most people gain a stone in their first year due to the excellent nightly buffet at 4QR to QP staff so bring your trainers!
Best to be based in Doha and the schools their are always looking for good teachers. Dukhan is a bit isolated but yes I would bring your x box, wii and inflatable girlfriend fir the linley nights. Liquor permit is a must, especialy during Ramadan.....
I agree with aswin, it is great here. It's hard to recommend what to bring as it depends on what you like doing, but as regards clothes, all UK and US stores in Doha. The facilities are amazing, particularly for sport and socially there is always something to do if you want to. If I could go back I would have brought less stuff and just used my allowance for precious things I couldn't live without. There isn't anything I can't get here now, even down to British food in the local shop.
Hi harry
Congrats on your job..As a long term resident of Dukhan I can guarantee u that its one of the best places in Qatar...The facilities the company has provided are outstanding and there are large no. of UK nationals here .So u are not alone here......I m sure that u r gonna have a good time here .
It is hell living in Doha. Dukhan could kill you. I hope the pay is really good.
A lot of British Teachers in Dukhan. Although Dukhan is about an hours drive from Doha. Most of the people who live in Dukhan do have a lot on as I hear. There is execellent gym. A small golf course, a lovely beach club.
But you will need to visit Doha time to time. I hope it helps.
Post this in the British Club in Doha also. Will get the appropriate answers from fellow Brits.
