Moving to Qatar from Bahrain
I placed this in the Qatar Lounge by mistake - probably better here:
I will be moving to Doha in Feb 2007. My wife, 2 children and cat will be following a month or so later.
Can someone please give me some advice on the following:
1. We don't want to live on a compound. I have heard that it is possible to get a 4+ bedroom house outside of compounds - is this true? - we can go to about 17,000 QR. Are there places with pools?
2. Is it possible for my wife to bring her son over here (from Sydney Australia) - he is 21 in April - is it possible for him to get work there? Not qualified but very good at web site design.
3. Our children are 8 and 9 - what is the situation with schools? - the only positive answer I've had (by phone) is from the Qatar Academy. All the rest have waiting lists.
4. If we can't get suitable accomodation or resolve the school issue - I have thought about getting myself a small bedsitter and commuting weekly back to Bahrain (30mins flight)where we live in a very good villa near children's school.
Does anyone do this?
Don't bother to take your kids to DESS if your kids don't have british passport, they won't even take the application form because too many waiting lists...

We are living in a compound provided by the company and I have seen some of my friends lives outside compound don't have the same facilities as we do. They do have 4 bedrooms house Villa possible but probably more expensive than compound.
Compound is the safest place for a family to live especially for the kids when they want to play outside your house.

Yes it is! you will be his sponsor and you have to pay for all his expenses.

Try DESS where my kids go they are still accepting kids until now as far as I know. DESS is very reputable English school others are Doha College and ASD.

Wow! that's a lot of traveling you're thinking not very nice to be away from your family most of the time.

No!
I hope you have an idea from my comments and good luck!!!

Thank you for your replies - they are welcome.
Contact www.qatarpetrelocators.com for the cat.
For #4, British Airways has a daily flight Doh-Bah, roundtrip for 560 QR. That's pretty reasonable if all else fails...
1. Search the site for information about housing and villas. You will find a lot of discussion about it. For QR17k you should get something nice. Places with pools are available (some compounds have shared pools, some villas have private pools).
2. Not sure but don't think it will be a problem - ask your company. Each company normally has a department called public or government relations. They deal with these sort of things.
3. All the schools do have long waiting lists...it is an issue.
4. That just sounds like a nightmare...
5 days and not one lousy reply to a question for help about moving there. I thought this was a site for people to help others moving there!!!
I notice people are inundated with replies to questions about bringing their dog - or about cold weather
Thanks for all the help.........
