Moving to Qatar - new graduate

Hi everyone

I am new here and I am hoping to ask as to what is the best strategy for a new graduate with limited experience wanting to kick start a career in Qatar. I have recently graduated this summer and currently working for a bank as a temp.

The graduate oppportunities in this country does not attract me / are very finite and I want to move somewhere much more interesting. However, the main reason as to why I want to move abroad is that I want to move somewhere much more interesting. While I understand that lack of experience may work against me, I am nevertheless very willing to lower my expectations in order for me to get my foot in employment within the Middle East. My priority at the moment is to show employers my enthusiasm to learn the company from bottom up and progress.

I am a British citizen and have studied economics at a red-brick/Russell group university.

Thanks.

I'm kinda in the same situation and I have recently graduated from Uni however I do have some experience within the industry I want. Currently I am in the UK but I have been applying for jobs in Qatar and I have been offered some jobs but the process is so long because I hoping to be in Doha ASAP!!. Does anyone know what the average salary package is for a Sales and Marketing job in a top hotel is? I'm currently doing my Pre-Screen Assessment and I have 1 more interview left as I have completed 3 phone interviews. I am a British citizen who was born in Qatar and I have completed University, so what are my chances? any advice on what I should do now?

Oh to the Guy above, Qatar is a very interesting place and I spend all my vacations there ;)

Thanks guys = )

If you are not a professional then you will find yourself competing with approximately 2 million people from the sub-continent and the Philippines for a minimum-wage job (or less.)

Mandilulur - that's precisely why I have emphasised the words 'entry-level/graduate-level'. This is because I am fully aware that I can't apply for professional jobs - I am neither qualified nor have the experience to apply for such jobs. Therefore, what I was hoping to ask is what job hunting strategy I should employ, given my background (fresh graduate_, and the labour market in Qatar? - I just want to hear from someone who actually lived and worked in Qatar. Thanks.

Thanks a lot everyone for the advise. While I was hoping more for a positive advise as to how to approach job hunting, given my background, if what has been said above is exactly what I need to hear, then fair enough.

It seems that I'm in a catch 22 then, and I may need to stick it out here in UK first. But I'm still determined to look for suitable graduate-level opportunities in the middle east.

what you should do is get an experience of at least 2 years as that is where most start their career. as a fresh graduate you shouldn't expect too much that you will be hired immediately as companies prefer hiring experienced professionals (which may not be the case all the time).

I believe it's common knowlege here that one needs at least 3 years good, solid experience before being hired as a professional.

So are you suggesting that career progression for graduates is very poor? If so, is this true as well with large (or otherwise) companies who have entry-level but graduate level opportunities? Also, what do you think is the best way for new graduates to enter employment in Qatar?

lb, the problem is that entry-level here is somewhere in the sub-basement, salary-wise. Do you really want to be working for a couple hundred pounds a month? I perceive that promotions here are pretty rare, they will just hire in on top of you. And I don't believe that a low-level job here in the GCC will do your resume that much good. Sorry to be so realistic!

A grad student who hasn't figured out how to turn off the caps lock? Doesn't bode well for Nigerian education system.

Thanks for your reply. As I am trying to maximise the success of my job hunting, I was hoping to ask what would be the most effective way of applying for entry-level/fresh graduate-level jobs? Most of the advertised ones pertain to senior positions, and I have been told that applying directly to companies (speculative or otherwise) would give me a greater chance. Is this true? Any other tips? Thanks a lot!

Well, you have mentioned it yourself. You have to start and build your career from the bottom and gradually as you gain experience along the way,you can be confident about yourself.Yes,lack of experience may work against new graduates but they usually compensate that by accepting and working with a minimum salary package.
