My experience about moving or not moving

Sasuke
By Sasuke

I want to share my experience, maybe someone could learn from my mistakes.

I live and work in Italy, I'm italian and I have a good career in online marketing & Sales. During my career I served several countries in Europe.

Almost one year ago I read that Vodafone got the licence for operating in Qatar. I was courious and visited some websites about Qatar, Doha etc and I was very attracted. Too much sunny ok, but with the sea (I'm a sailing maniac!) and good money opportunities, so I tried to contact someone at Vodafone using Linkedin.

Straight to the point, I got an interview and visited Doha. The Vodafone people I met was really extremely kind, the city worst than I expected. I got a job offer, even for a lower level (responsabilities and salary) than I expected and time for moving was very short, some weeks. I accepted, than just before moving weeks I said no. I've been very unpolite with this people because I was very scared of a such moving in such short time. Moreover I have a girlfriend that don't speaks english at that time and it could me a problem.

Why I'm writing this? It's because since that time, I dream about Doha, Qatar, the missing opportunity every night. I think that reject this opportunity is probably the bigger mistake I made in my career.

What I want to suggest to those who will read this post is, even if moving could seem a huge blind jump, please be brave and do it. If things will be bad, you will always in time to do a step behind.

Cheers, S.

Been here for a month and from day once everything was wrong. I arrived to find my accomodation in bad condition and my company was not willing to give me another place immediately. My job was good but my colleagues were nasty...not all but most and a good In relationship ended because of this stupid move.

I had everything going for me back home and I decided on a new adventure and something got to go...that was my relationship and I have been counting the day I could leave Qatar. It is good for Sasuke to write and tell his side of the story!

I am trying to enjoy my time here and trying to make new friends and explore the city and I hope when I leave Qatar I'll have a nicer memory!.

Hey man dont worry and dont get upset. think positive and believe in the fact that whatever happens, happens for the best. May be it was your gut feeling which said NO to Doha at that time. If you really want to come here, its a growing place and there will be ample oppartunities in near future so dont panic at all. I came from Dubai and I miss Dubai terribly now but I am only waiting for a right time to go back as recession is still eating jobs. so always trust your inner voice and stay positive. plus man Doha has very limited recreational activities, less disco and pubs and in summer its damn hot, dusty and humid so think twice before you make decision. its a quiet life here and if you are a party animal then this isnt a right place for you. good luck.

Hi Sasuke,

Nothing is perfect in this world. You decide what you like and what you want. May be you expect too much things here. It seems that your expectation does not meet the offer from Vodafone and the country environment. You shall adjust new place if you want to work abroad.

But I both agree and disagree with what you did. I agree that you shouldn't be coming to Doha if you don't like the job and the money it pays (unless there is no other way and you have to come here to make ends meet in Italy). I disagree with how you came here, agreed to work and then deserted the company. Although it may not have been much, the company too invested some money, time and manpower into talking to you, assessing your qualities etc...

While it may seem like a missed opportunity, understand that whatever happens, happens for the good. You might get another job here soon enough. Just remember that next time you do something like this, have it in your heart to stick with your decision. It'll save you and many others involved a lot of time, money and pain.

Just my two dirham's for your thought.

sasuki, I did what you were afraid to do, I was brave enough to grab the opportunity in just a short period of time and went to dubai, and now I'm back here in Doha after a month of staying their and wish that I had given myself more time to think.

You dream about doha while others like me dream of getting the f=ck out of here soon

If it's not for you then it's not, live your life by thinking more about tommorrow and not the past

Maybe it was the best decision you've made and the timing wasn't right nor the package, if I read between the lines correctly.

Besides, if you're looking to work in a "sunny" country, other than yours..:), you can always re-apply, opportunities in Qatar and the Gulf are abundant.

Thanks for sharing.
