Newcomer to Qatar

I am an aussie girl who has accepted a role in Qatar.  I will be arriving mid Jan.  At this stage I am planning on coming over "solo" and would appreciate any tips and advice from expats.  I have accommodation sorted, but I would like to know a little more about the expat community there and the best way to intergrate.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

 Thanks

I came to know from your profile that you are planning to come Qatar for an employment offer. As an experienced person, I would like to suggest you that if your emloyment contract offering you accommodation, well thats good. Otherwise, negotiate with them to provide a furnished accommodation. In case, the employer is not ready to give, it is better to have clear cut idea about it. Otherwise, you have to pay what you are getting. You planned to be here to earn something for your future. Wish you all the best and see you soon!!!

I am sorry to say this but "Arab men & western women topic"is full of ignorance. Most westerners i met here have hard time distingushing between arabs, indians, bangalishes, south americans....etc. Some people think anybody who is non-white is an arab. How bizare is this!!!!

I want to share my experince with people when i was in the us. I stayed the first 2 years of college in white hood. Because I was one of the few non white people in that place. Everybody always used to stair at me. Both guys & girls staired, does that means that i have been sexually harrassed or eye raped for 2 years........etc, no it is just that i looked different. Sometimes it made feel special and sometimes i felt i do not belong there. It is just something you need getting used to. I think it actully increased my confidance of myself.

You forgot to tell her about the protection hotline i set up recently. It gaurantees your safety and the offenders a lifetime of disability.

Wether i am doing this to benefit the private medical sector remains a mystery.

... the "Arab men and western women" topic is a collusion of the worst experiences many people have had over several years here. I came over alone from Australia and the worst thing that has happened is that I got tailgated once by a guy wanting to give me his number after i smiled at him for letting me cut in. i tricked him into pulling over then took off. alot of the guys who live here are sleazy but you get over it. if you live in a nice area and make sure you have access to a driver or get your own car, you'll be fine.

Its quite fun here actually, if you're interested in rugby at all, the rugby club is a thriving community for aussies, kiwis and other native english speakers so you'll have instant friends.

good luck!
