Once bitten twice shy!

Hello Expats, we are a family of 5 who moved back from Kuwait a year ago. W didn't do our homework and only realised once there how rubbish my husbands package was. I DO NOT want to make the same mistake again. My hubby has been offered a job in Qatar, the salary is USD8000, annual flights home, accommodation, car, petrol. He is negotiating schooling( if this doesn't happen we won't bother) however if it does, I would like to know from other families if this is enough for us to live the life???? ( and I mean live it! ) I'm not prepared to even entertain the the thought if it isn't, so please let me know!!
Many thanks in advance!

Ciao

It says in your OP that the $8000 is over and above housing, car, petrol, flights home and possibly schooling. If you can secure schooling, then yes, you should be able to stay and home and have a maid.

and then it is an comptetive offer...

Search the forum to have an idea about other expenses..

If yer thinking about sending your kids to the American School of Doha (ASD) it is probably one of the most expensive school in this country so make sure that the company covers the schooling.

It is almost $ 100,000/= Per Anum package (Tax Free). Guess you should try to get school fee included for at least one child. Since your accommodation will be provided by the company you will end up saving at least 30% of take home salary. Add another 450 dollars for a maid since you have 3 children..It is a Good Package considering financial crunch in most countries...So my advise ... GO FOR IT.

Well, I don't think it would go as far as a speed boat and a Range Rover. It's a good, even nice middle-class life but may not extend to kids trekking in Nepal while you lounge in the Maldives on holiday. Let's just say you'd not be in the top one percent of expats but certainly could be in the top 20%.

You can have a Good Life here in Qatar. Best of Luck.

Schooling for 3 children will be quite pricey in a reputable school, I wouldn't even consider the offer unless this is covered.

Ooops, sorry it was a typo....

I believe the OP means they have 3 children - the children and parents constitute a family of five total

Life is all about how you manage and if one cannot manage , no matter what you get you will go dry by the month end . The idea of working in this part of the world , leaving your home country, loved ones etc is to make a better saving and having a good living and i am sure with all other facelity provided above 8000US$ as salary i think it is a resonabely good package, well if schooling is also paid why not? -God bless

Are the benefits mentioned over and above the USD$8000/month? Petrol here is probably nearly the cheapest in the GCC but if you rent or buy a car - a Corolla will set you back about QAR2000/month to rent and to buy a larger vehicle the payments would probably be slightly more depending on your down payment.

If you're looking for a 3 or 4 bed villa in a good compound with good management and facilities - could cost upwards of 12 - 15k month.

Well by "the life" I mean, not have to work full time as my youngest is only 1 and be able to have a maid, a car and also save a little. We've already uprooted our family only to lose money and not make any so I have to be sure. However I'm very grateful for all the comments thus far!

Going out twice a week along with food expenses should cost you around 1000$/person/month as per my previous records.

5 x 1000 = 5000 $ a month spent on food and restaurants.

3000$ might not be enough for doing some actual savings though.

I would like to go with the comments of Miss Mimi. If you are talking about a normal decent life yes it is a good offer.

Hello Trystan, Im living here with my family. My dad earns about $6600 per month all inclusive and we live confortably on this amount but going and dining out in the fancy hotels regularly is out of the question. But this is for a family of 3 Since we enjoy going to nice places and socilaizing and going on holidays my mum has gotten a job now to. So to answer your question, i dont think $8000 is enough to enjoy life here for a family of 5.if schooling is not included, absolutely forget it. We dont worry about this as there are no children to send to school. Qatar, as you know is a rich country so im sure you can find better deals here. All the best xxx

What's your definition of "the life"? If you mean take a couple of nice holidays a year and buy decent clothes & food, yes. If you mean buy Louis Vuitton and jet off to Paris every other month. No.
