Points on license and insurance
How annoying- I recently got caught doing 35 mph (gasp) in a 30 zone here in the UK, and have been given the option of a fine + 3 ponts on my (clean) license OR a fine and an 'opportunity' to attend a 3 hour speeding awareness course.
The latter option would mean taking tme of work, presumably to flog myself mercilessly for my heinous behaviour and vow to see the error of my Boy Racer ways;)
I am tempted to take the points, (thanks) but am wondering if this would affect my international DL which I would need to drive when I arrive in Qatar (??)
Also wondering how insurance works out there as I have seen classifieds for cars with payment options of with/ without insurance? Am confused!
Is it difficult to apply for Int D L?
Thanks:)
If, the used car you opt to purchase has other car accidents or traffic fines annotated in your registration and your insurance finds out about it, your deductible goes up and your premium renovation at the end of the year goes up automatically.
I just bought, no more than 2 days a brand new Ford pickup in cash.
I choose to purchase my insurance premium with full coverage options.
One of the many questions I did asked: Do I keep the full coverage of the insurance as long I'm the original owner? The answer was yes! but Once I trade or sell the car it becomes a third party unless I choose to change the type of policy since I paid in full for the car and you owed no money to the bank.
I end up adding some extra options such as secondary driver coverage. Passenger and driver alcohol coverage during and next day driving under the influence.(HANGOVER)
I know you heard the old urban legend saying: If you ask for directions in how to get to Rome, you will get there.
You need to ask as much you can about your insurance policy.
They love scenarios as a form of them explaining their policies.
My opinion and the most help full agent, I have found out so far in Doha as for insurance services is Lebanon/Swiss Insurance Services.

Thanks for that.. I think Adey advised me a while back on cars.. to check it out when I'm out there. This is solid advice and much appreciated, but I have a one track mind on a Rav 4!! Have wanted one forever:) Preferably in pink..(joke)
Adey.. seen a couple of them in the Classifieds.. are they pretty hard to get hold of? Anything else would be too big I reckon.
So, again, thanks for help, think I'm going to avoid the AA style humiliation: 'My name is *** and I'm a speedoholic (35km- phnarf) and take the points.
Will surely be back to harangue your heads about who to buy from etc..
Cheers all
oh, and tallg.. we have a big day tomorrow:)
UK Driving license, can go to direct converting to Qatar DL without obtaining Driving school and Test...
I had an international liscence and they didnt even look at when I frented the car from the airport. Just showed Canadian liscence and it was fine rented for a month. 1600QR.
Points don't worry about it. To get insurabce here is very easy and very cheap. I had a guy go get my car registered and insurance for a year, car checked aswell(need to when more than 3 years old) all for 750QR.Very cheap.

Unless they've changed the rules, you don't need international driving license, a UK one is fine. Don't think points are an issue.
As for insurance, I think I'm right in saying that the car is insured not the owner, so you can buy a car and not have to worry about reinsuring until the old insurance runs out.
You might also want to know that insurance seems to work a bit oddly out here. When we bought a used car which was only 3 years old we were told we could only get 3rd party insurance for it, since that what the previous owers (who also bought it used) had opted for. So it's like, you can have fully comp. when new, but as soon as it's switched to 3rd party there's no going back.
Also, I seem to remember the way the calculate the value of your car for fully comp. insurance purposes (i.e. what they'll pay out if it's completely wrecked) was odd as well. Something about just devaluing it by a set percentage every year, and not taking into account the 2nd-hand market value of the car at all.
I'm sure someone else on here will have more concrete details than me on the above. I'd be interested to hear about it if anyone does.
You will need your British Licence. dont worry about any points. It will not affect your insurence.
