Qatar Police Department

Please please help.  I want to know if uk citizens can apply to become police officers in Qatar and if so how do I go about it?  I have spent hours online and I'm not getting anywhere.  My boyfriend has got a job as a teacher in Qatar he starts in August but I don't seem to be having much luck.  I'm currently a prison officer and would like to look at jobs realated to the police and possibly airport security but i just dont know where to look.  I'm also a woman maybe this is going to go against me.  Time is running out so any advice or info would really help.

As a prison officer, wouldn't  you lack the qualifications to be a police officer in the UK  without extensive re-training?  Wouldn't it take a long time to get peace officer qualifications in Qatar coming from no background in law-enforcement in the system here?

Yes, living together is a crime-end of conversation.  In reality you would probably not wind up in prison, but could very easily be deported.  My neighbours were caught living together when one of the women at their workplace squealed on them.  They were generously treated, they were given one week to either get married or get out of the country.  They got married.

Hemaya has female security guards but I have heard mixed reviews of their reputaton.

Hey lousie...still awaiting my security friend to get back to me...but aside to that, just going on your qualifications you've mentioned, there are alot of projects going on in the youth sector, projects usually mean consultants are in so the ability to speak arabic is desirable but not essential....maybe thats a path you can try also....eggs in one basket thinking? But that path works best with contacts.....I may have some but will get back to you if thats something that appeals.

Also, read up on other threads here, living with a boyfriend and work conditions.....it is a tad different here!

don't worry about it, she was already taken...besides would you want someone that could bring you down and wrap you into a headlock with one hand tied behind her back?  That kind of scares me.

I'm from the North East - Aberdeen ....... bloody cold there most of the time, but I do miss seeing green things. There was grass being cut the other day on the Rayaan Road and I turned full circle at the roundabout just so I could keep smelling it! No life, or what?

So I thought I would throw in my tuppenceworth ....... the basic law is that it is illegal to have sexual relations with someone you're not married to, and the authorities do take it seriously. In saying that, there are any number of people living together under one guise or another and there are also plenty of Qatari men who have girlfriends with whom they do more than just hold hands. So it's one of those "it's okay until you are caught" situations and, as somebody pointed out earlier, it only takes one pissed off neighbour to drop you in it. Someone else mentioned that the schools will do or say anything to get qualified teachers - there's a plethora of unqualified people teaching in schools here and it is ruining some kids' education.

As regards the police, I have a friend in Civil Defence (where all of the Police, Traffic Police, Fire Brigade, etc are drawn from), and  they will only hire Muslims who speak, read and write Arabic. Mostly it's Pakistanis and Sudanese, and unfortunately they are treated very differently to the Qataris who are doing the same job.

Michty me, that's a long post ....... I must be bored!!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do Louise, but as many on here have pointed out - research is very importangt before coming here to live.

the stage set used to wobble about and, as a result, it got something of a cult following because it was so silly.  I wonder if it's googable?  I may look lol

then she would have to move to Saudi....and Talal only hires Saudi females...so you are adding a whole new level of complexity to an apparently already desperate situation.

Well thank you certainly seem to have good knowledge of the place.  I need to do a lot more research.  Im just finding it hard to deal with the restrictions that are placed on women.  Being a prison officer in a male jail I'm used to it been the other way around haha!  I've applied for a couple of jobs with Qatar Airlines.  Maybe my officer days are over which isn't a bad thing its a stressful job and I don't mind the idea of a nice desk job!  I have a degree in criminology ans I used to be a youth worker and drugs worker plus I've managaed a pub so not a bad cv for someone of my age.  Who knows Il just keep trying.

Thanks again

for certain if they still allow foreign nationals to be police officers?  I believe, but not completely certain, that the entire force has already been Qatarized.

There are indeed female Police officers here in Qatar, but really think you have no chance in getting a job in the police force here. I would imagine that being able to read and speak Arabic will be a requirement as most of the Law is not translated into English.

I agree with Oh My regarding the situation of your intention to live with your Boyfriend here. Many schools here will say and promise anything in order to get staff - there are many schools are finding it challenging to recruit staff.

Basically it is a big NO NO to living with your Boyfriend - it only takes one neighbour or someone with a grudge to bear to inform you to the authorities - then you will be looking at a possible deportation for the both of you.

My advice do more research - Get married before you come here - look into consultancy security work.

Sorry that there is really not much positivity regarding the questions you posed - but really Qatar is a nice place to live - I have been here for 10 years - although this year is my last. great weather apart from the  height of summer, relatively safe (apart from the driving!), great opportunities for watersports, dining out in beautiful places. Qatar is changing though and is becoming more expensive to live in, but the sun still shines more or less every day.

I'm not sure what part of what I'm telling you don't understand.

If you are going to be working in the criminal justice field here then you may want to look up Sharia Law. It may explain a few things for you.

So say we did live together (lets say in sin as you put it)  and someone did tell the authorities they see that as an actual crime?

ok...until caught. Caught can be described as when one of your neighbors or acquaintances gets upset with you (or your living situation because of their morals) and reports your living situation to the authorities....you can try your luck...or just go ahead and marry him so that you aren't living in sin.

go ahead and live with your boyfriend in an Islamic Middle Eastern country and see how fast you will be staring at the other prison guards...but from the other side of the bars....I second the question...how much research have you done?

Well yes we were told this but then told we would be ok as you said if we were descreet.  Not just for boyfriend, England is rubbish and cold!

I didn't think Qatar would have female police officers but maybe I could find something along the lines of airport security I just don't know where to look so if you have any info that would be great.  We do plan to get married thats our plan B haha

I'm sorry to tell you but you must be very careful and discreet if you live with BF.....it isn't really legal.

DaRuDe is right.... i don't think you could get a job with the police.

If you are prepared to do all this for bf...it would be a lot easier if you just married him.

Yeah I thought that.  A country with no female police or prison officers? madness.  Just dont know where to look for these types of jobs though.  Any ideas?
