Relocating to Doha - Please help
Hello Everybody from a new member.
I moved to Dubai recently from Aberden, UK, and I am soon to be relocating to Doha. I really know very little about Qatar so I was wondering if you guys could help answer some of my questions.
I am a 32 year old Scotsman, single, coming to work as a lawyer so I don't need to know about schools or other family stuff, just the essentials such as bars and take away restaurants!
Here are my main questions.
1. Accommodation - this is the biggest one. As far as I know I will be working in or around the Financial Centre but I have to arrange my own accommodation. I would be looking for a one bed apartment, preferably with a pool and gym. How difficult is that to find? Budget up to 8000 per month? I have absolutley no idea of that is a reasonable budget as I am comparing with Dubai. Also what sort of areas should I be looking at?
2. Social - what are the bars like. Are there a few decent ones, and how much is a beer? Are there nightclubs? I am not looking for a wild social scene or a sleazy pick-up joint (although they have their merits!), just somewhere to go to relax at the weekend. Can you buy drink for home consumption?
3. Sport - I will be getting membership of the country club which is great for me as I love golf. Is that a good place to meet people, and would that take care of my gym and pool? I have heard the rugby club is also a good place to go. I am perhaps too old to be making a playing comeback but I have been told it is still a good place to go to socialise.
4. General - Is it true that there are decency laws, or will I still be able to wear modest shorts in public? Again I am comparing with Dubai which is probably unfair, but I have nothing else to go on. What sorts of things are there to do at the weekend in Doha? Is a car a necessity or can you taxi around the city? Is there anything else I should know about Qatar?
So many questions because this is a real surprise move but I am really looking forward to the opportunity and I will be returning to Dubai two weekends a month so will still be able to get my share of nights out when I am back.

Most new to Doha expats from your area would tend to start with Garvey's on Salwa Road or the Rugby Club, close to Doha College. Both have bar, food & facilities, check them out. Once you have spoken to the numerous sociable people in there you will get a better idea of where to go and where not to go!!!
Hey, I'm a young (22) guy who has just relocated from Aberdeen to Doha. I'm finding it really hard to settle in (only been here a week) and would appreciate any help thats around. I know there is a large expat population in the city but where does everyone go in the evenings/on Fridays?
I would mind to chaperon a couple of drinks here and there if my schedule allows me.
I am presently living & working in Aberdeen for the last 16yrs and I am due to start a new job in Doha in December,
maybe we could catch up and say hello ?
i am very keen to get some golf as I play lots in Aberdeen.
Look forward to your reply.
John...
You can find lots and lots of relevant info by searching this site. The topics you are covering have been asked hundreds of times. Use the search buttom on you right.
Ok, quick answers.
1-you can get a 2 bed flat for 8000 (just!) but if you want a flat with facilites the price could be as high as 15,000. 1 bedroom appartements are extremely difficult to find. Your best bet is to look for a small two bed flat.
Finantial Centre...Never heard of that...is that Al Saad area? Find out where your offices will be located and then try to find accom as close as possible to your officies. It will save you hours of traffic.
2- To buy alcohol for home use you will have to get a license. It is an easy procedure and you will need a letter from your sponsor.
There are a few bars in doha and places to hang out. Although there isn't a wide choice of places to go.
3- Getting into a leisure club might be a little difficult. Most have long waiting lists.
4- Nowadays you can wear pretty much what you want. It has changed a lot, I remember two years ago it was so different! I advise you to go easy on the shorts when visiting malls, otherwise fine.
Dont' rely on taxis. Get a car.
What sort of things you can do during your weekends??? You can take a short flight back to Dubai.:D
good luck
