Rules of three-lane roundabouts?

By dr woo

Hi QL'ers!

So, I have been testing the crazy roads in Doha and it's pretty much worse than expected :(

What are the official traffic regulations to tackle multilane roundabouts?

I have no problem with the standard rules: yield, signal, no overtaking. However, how about the direction options for each lane in the roundabout once you enter the ongoing traffic?

Would these be prudent rules to follow?

1. Right lane: turn right, go straight.
2. Middle lane: turn right, go straight.
3. Left lane: go straight, turn left, u-turn (u-ey :).

Thanks!

there are no rules.

you need to make your way out as soon as possible before you get hit by other car.

VERY IMPORTANT:

If you did make a mistake by not taking the correct lane for your exit before you enter the r/a, don't correct yourself inside the roundabout by changing lanes. Instead go around the r/a once and then take your intended exit. This way you also have priority over others who are seeking to enter the r/a. Negotiating a roundabout is a definite pain for a wholesome drivers here. I though find it pretty easy once you have super command over your vehicle and quick reflexes. Keep your eyes on drivers on either side of you to make sure where they're going. Play defensive if they're cutting your lane. People do cut my lane and I too cut people's lanes. They honor my way and I honor them too accordingly. Good luck!

why so many different answers??i feel more afraid now that I know most of the people dont know how to use the roundabout.

Please anyone from traffic police can clear the doubhts??

And Expats....Dont expect qataries to follow the rule...they are natives and no amount of discussion will help them..JUST MOVE OUT OF THEIR WAY...it is better for our life..

From driving school,I was taught that left is for U turn, and left only.

RIGHT for right and straight

MIDDLE for STRAIGHT ONLY...

Simple -

Right lane - For turning right, going straight, turning left, or for parking and waiting for friend.

Middle lane - For turning right, going straight, turning left.

Left lane - For turning right, going straight, turning left.

The golden rule is the bigger the car, or if a pick up, then go in any direction that takes your fancy.

If you are worried or frightened by roundabouts always approach them whilst texting, this gives you carte blanche to enter the roundabout and all other users will stop for you.

Works for me

Simply, avoid changing lanes while you are inside the R/A, at the same time be defensive to those who might violate that rule.

Prepare yourself and change lanes "Before" you enter the R/A, so that you would not have to change it in the R/A.

There is no rule to many situations, so please yeald to others and be carefull. Example, 2 lane R/A for a 3 Lane road, ...

international rules:

right lane - turn right (or straight IF middle lane is clear)

middle lane - STRAIGHT (or left ONLY IF left lane is clear)

left lane - left, u turn or straight (ALWAYS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY)

so this means:

leftmost lanes have the most priority

but this is not always followed here, sad to say...

don't u dare try to turn right from the middle lane, unless u want to have a trip to the cops and your garage, the middle lane is for going straight ONLY!!!

Don't get me started on these darn r/a's ... The rules here seem to be, if you're going left, take the right lane, if you're going right take the left lane. You have to watch and think for all the cars around you to be cautious of where they are actually going. It's terrible, especially with the traffic lights, there is not one sensible understanding that everyone knows how to use it properly... Seems to be each to their own..
