Shipping container to get back home - how much? plus other questions !

Hi all,

My husband and I are waiting for a formal offer to come back from the head office of his company and in the mean time the company is applying for my husband's visa. So I think pretty much, we are coming to DOHA !

Anyway, more to the point, I am trying to be prepared for every possibility and think of every scenario...

In the draft contract it said that if we terminate the position before the end of the project, or if my hubby doesn't make it past probation we will have to foot the bill to relocate back home. So I am thinking, do we bother to take all of our things with us in case we do have to come home earlier than expected? how much will a shipping container cost? are they easy to organise?

Also if we don't organise accomodation until we arrive, how will we know if we need our furniture or not ? we might end up with something fully furnished? Also, do most villas in a compound have a backyard? I would like to bring our dog but not if there is no backyard...
I am slightly lost at where to start with all this preparation !! Sorry for the long post but I have NO idea what I am doing !

"you can have all the furnishers in Doha or else rent with fully furnished apartment. rather spending shipping charges you may easily rent a flat or villa as per your interest. You may search in QL or majoror else property dealer in Doha to find out the good one. Or else contact us."

Lacey I think your problem would be accomodation...and not shipping!!!

The Company will give you accomodation for only 6 weeks Thats not even 2 mths. Do you have any idea of the rents here?

If you can get/afford accomodation then it usually comes furnished or you can buy almost every household furniture/electronic/electric things here.

How much will you be willing to pay for accomodation QR15,000, Qr20,000 ...per month?

There is no Tax here but people usually pay 50% of their income to the Rent Mafia

The cost of moving a container is huge!! I paid about QR 40 000 for a 40 ft container from South Africa.

BUT, I only made the decision after 12 months. In the meantime I had an unfurnished flat which I furnished with very basic things for about QR 3 500 or so.

oh ok !

Well, I know that we will be put up for 6 weeks to give us time to find accomodation so I guess by the 6 wk mark we should have some indication.

I am assuming though that we need to decide NOW if we are taking our stuff or not...??

Most company i know normally putting their staffs in their fully furnished accommodation during probation. That way you have less thing to loose if thing don't turn up as expected.
