I am planning to visit Malaysia and would like to know about the exciting things to do in Malaysia. Although the tourism website has a lot to offer, I believe that a true picture always comes from a person who has visited that place. So do share all your insights.
Seriously, Malaysia is a gorgeous country and I've found the people to be warm and friendly. An overlooked gem in SE Asia.
The Malaysian Government has a program called MM2H (Malaysia my 2nd home) for people interested in retiring there and that's our plan. Great country, great people, great food, low cost of living, lots of places to visit, a bus ride or short flight to Singapore....need I say more?
I've not visited yet but Kota Kinabalu/Sabah is supposed to be gorgeous and very relaxed. You can fly there cheaply with Air Asia from KL.
If anyone reading this is interested in properties for investment/retirement in Malaysia , let me know and I'll be happy to share my story and put you in touch with a great agent in KL.
stay in BUKIT BINTANG... and book in the hotel nearest the metro station... everything will be easy and walking distance to almost evry mall... near the KL tower too and just a few minutes to Petronas tower... get a hold of a KL map by the way and always take the metro to avoid traffic
Hi - I saw your question about buying property in Malaysia. I've just bought a very nice apartment just outside KL. Very nice and a good price compared to other popular Asian destinations. I think a lot of people overlook Malaysia as a great place to own property.

Malaysia has a lot to offer, depends on how much time you have and preference. My favourite picks
1. Dive at Sipadan Island (Sabah Malaysia)
This little island has one of the best dive sites in the world. Stay at the nearby Mabul Island.
Direction: Fly to Tawau from KL by Air Asia, then take taxi to Semporna. Accommodation and packages are plenty at Semporna.
2. Langkawi Island
This is one of the most visited Island in Malaysia. World Class beaches, lots of shopping. Its a duty free island by the way. Many activities pretty well developed.
3. Kuala Lumpur / Putrajaya / Genting Highlands / Melaka
For city experience you may spend 4/5 days in KL, take a day tour to Putrajaya (the Administrative Centre) and to Genting Highlands for some theme parks and casino. Head south to the historic city of Malacca
4. Taman Negara Pahang (National Parks)
The oldest rainforest in the world, just few hours from KL. Many activities, has lots of flora and faunas
5. Gunung Mulu National Parks, Sarawak
Visit the largest / longest cave chambers in the world.
Malaysia has many other attractions, It is one of the most visited countries in the world. Travelling is very easy and it is one of the cheapest too.
but I only saw the mainland of Malaysia briefly (industrial Butterworth!). I was in KL merely in transit, but I spent a couple of weeks on Penang Island in '83. I remember taking the funicular railway to the top of a small mountain then hiking down without a soul in sight on a muddy track where I spotted a coiled snake that frightened the life out of me! There was also a "private zoo" near the hotels on Batu Ferringhi where a wonderfully eccentric Aussie cancer survivor showed me his motley collection of animals and regaled amazing stories of his life in Penang. I have friends who plan to retire there in a year or two, so I guess it must still be beautiful.
