1) Bring things that remind you of home, whether that is a blanket, favorite slippers, sweater, pictures. It doesn't matter what it is, if you can fit it in a suitcase or have it shipped, bring it.
2) Bring converters and a lot of them. Or be sure to find a bunch when you get here.
3) Put your head in an oven and drench your head in water, that is what it will feel like when you walk outside.
4) Don't just shuttle yourself from your compound to work to Carrefour.
5) Talk to as many people as possible. Don't be shy, pretty much everyone is a newbie. Even some of the people who seem like seasoned pros have only been here for a few months. If you always wanted to learn how to go horseback riding, ask around and find out where to ride.
1)The Temperature is high at 51 deg C at Noon, make sure you drink plenty of water and also bring some ENO, Cooling tea, vegetables in most restaurents are not on the menu. Diet is bad alot of Macs so make sure you can Cook , survival cooking for balanced diet
2)Humidity is low at 20% recorded by my logger, so alot of sunblock and mosturisers are used, Try not to go out at noon, most people go out at night
3)Entertainment is nil, for Ramadan there is no food allowed , only after 6 pm food is consumed
4)Accomoidation is a must and driving is a must, the Taxis need to be booked
5)Streets are not properly labelled and you cannot describe where you are so if you take a cab of want to inform anyone of you whereabouts landmarks should be used example Ramada Hotel
Maps are limited and not accurate, street signage is bad, all signage is bad, you will not be able to tell people where you stay if you do not stay in Hotel.
Good point is Doha is small so even if you get lost the country is small
Thanks guys, I think I've pretty much searched this website top to toe now and found it very useful! I've just found out that I'll be moving during Ramadan, so starting to get a little nervous as I don't know what to expect! This will probably sound very niave but is it acceptable for a single woman to live with a single man? I only ask because theres a chance my friend will be offered a job with the same company as me.
Just browse this website extensively and go through the groups section too. I can assure you that any questions you have will have already been asked before and answered.
Biggest dilemma you have now is making sure you do ALL your research and like someone said above, 'the maths' of your move. Be prepared before you move, and you'll be fine.
Good Luck

My husband and I are considering working in Middle East. He has PHD in Mechanical Engineering and currently works for BHP Billiton. I am graphic designer and I worked in newspaper industry as well as in print industry.
We have 2 kids. Age 5 and age 3. For this reason we need to be somewhere where is safe. I read all 5 tips but can someone tell me about safety, kids at primary schools, and how to make a deal so me and my huby have jobs.
maybe this is blant question, but any help....thanks
I have said this before and I will say it again.

1 - Make sure decent accommodation is provided.
2- Make yourself very aware of the cost of living in Qatar, do your maths.
3- If possible, come here first, get a feel of the city and then take your decision.
4-Make lots of friends. Being by yourself in Qatar will drive you nuts.
5- Learn some anger managment or patience skills...Even if you are easy going with a good sense of houmour, you are likely to encounter so many inshallah kind of situations during the first few weeks that would make lose the nervs to the calmest person. Be prepared.
Well Qatar is quite a nice place peaceful and am sure u will like it here sallyb.

When you talk about a fantastic opportunity, I would think a fantastic job with a prestigeousfirm with very tempting salary and conditions.
Most important thing is to make sure that the whole package is convenient and all the terms of the proposal/contract are clear and cannot be interpreted in many ways.
Other things are minor details.
Welcome to Qatar.
