I have this friend who has two dogs that they adopt personaly,they live in industrial area, 2 mix breed,they just saw them walking infront of their house in the same area,thin and very hungry.they fed them and gave them a bath and from that day on they kept them,let them stayed on their compound and in the house during summer.just a few weeks ago,they came to visit my family and told me the sad story.

One day the 2 dogs are outside their compound,just wondering around and playing like they always does.the security gaurd of their compound herd 2 loud gun shot,when the guard went outside to for a look,he saw a police patrol car just about to leave.and a few step from the police mobil patrol lies 1 of the their dog and the other one walking very slow and then suddenly fell on the ground.he quickly called my friend and told them what just happened,when they went out,they still see from a far the poloce car leaving.they went to get their dogs,but one of them is dead and the other one is half breathing already,they took both of them,they cleaned the wound of the alive one and found 5 bullet holes at her back,they gave her an antibiotic and a penicillin,water and brought her inside the house.

for days they take care of her until she recovers,she's now walking and eating very well.but the sad part is they lost their guy.

2 cops with a shot gun,shooting the dogs.was they their first victim or there were more,we don't know.what i can say is,they're cruel and uneducated.poor them. this is a very sad story that happened in a real life here in qatar, so please,to all pet lovers out here in doha.be responsible.always keep your dogs inside your compound or houses unless you'll going out with them for a walk.

my point is,be a responsible owner,we are not home,we are all just visitors here and maybe after a few years we'll all go back to our homeland.will our pets be coming back with us as we go home,or we'll just bring their memories with us as we go?keep them safe.they're family.

Hi guys, my company wishes to purchase 5 belgian malinois in the philippines and shipped them here anytime soon,can you please recommend us a good airline that can help us with this matter,anyway the pups are only 4months old,will qatar reject them if the anti-rabies vaccined will be 2weeks old only. I want them to be here by next month.these dogs will be staying in the company's farm and will be trained for protection training.

Dealing with the UK is always awkward and expensive! Yes, I agree it is not something to take lightly. I have already decided to take a job in Europe before returning to the UK, the things we do for our pets

If you think it's difficult bringing pets to Qatar, try taking them home again! Qatar still dosnt belong to the pet passport scheme, which makes it difficult, expensive and 6 months quarantine in the UK :(

Do you mean an import/export certificate? You can get either one direct from the Ministry or, more easy, from Qatar Pet relocators or Doha Vets. Charge is about 350QR per animal, you need, for export, the original vaccination card and your ID and for import a scanned or photocopy of the vaccination card and your ID. Certain employers also require you to provide a letter of no objection from them as well.

the physical difference is practically nil, and not to be misunderstood as the cat coming into the cabin with you. Whether they travel as cargo or accompanied baggage; they still travel in the acclimatized hold in the base of the aircraft. A few airlines actually allow animals in the cabin with you, but not Qatar Airways. They only allow falcons.

Take care regarding regulations during the hottest parts of the year. They may not allow live animals during these times. please check to confirm.

It won't go on board with you (unless your dog is a guide dog and you're blind), but it will be treated as luggage, so it might even come on the conveyor belt. You'll have to do all the customs dealings yourself, if you bring your pet as accompanied luggage.

Does additional baggage mean that you can bring the animals on board if it meets the airline requirements??

I'm not too sure of the differences, QPR sent me a document explaining it to me at the time of my coming to Qatar but I can't really remember the difference.

I brought mine via cargo a few days after i came. Since I had no accomodation, they went straight to boarding, where they stayed for around 2 weeks. I visited the boarding facilities and they were ok, had a/c which is really important in Qatar.

My cats adjusted just fine, but they are indoor cats, have always been, so it's just a different flat for them. I think it was definetely the best thing for me and them to bring them over : )

I am debating bringing my little black cat with me to Qatar. I would miss him terribly if I had to leave him but I'd rather not put him through too much stress. Any other cat owners out there that can give me advice, knowing that cats sometimes have more difficulty with change than dogs?

more than that... i doubt any company would ever do it for you... and there is no way to bring it your self unless you fly your own plane... its cruel for the animal... simply because of the amount of movement that would happen to the fish... it would go into shock from the movement alone... not to mention the water issues you would run into

If you email QPR they'll send you a nice document stating the differences between sending your doggie via cargo or accompanied luggage. QPR will organize you the import permit and even board your dog for a few days if you need them to.

However, you might need a permit to export your dog from Australia (I know that this is the case in South Africa). Shop around as agents' charges vary hugely. If your hubby calls Qatar Airways (or whoever flies from Australia to Qatar) they'll be able to give him some agents' details.

Hubby will probably need to take doggie to the vet to get a health certificate and will need to send the vaccine certificate to QPR together with some other documents. Then QPR will organise the import permit, which hubby will need.

Thanks for all of the above tips and all suggestions itcertainly helps.  Has anyone brought in their dog from Australia?  I am trying to organise my tiny miniature pinsher to travel together with my husband (I dont know which will take the cabin seat and which will go in Cargo???...lol)  Does Pet Relocators organise the permit?  if not how do we go about it?  Also does Lufthansa fly from OZ? (if anyone knows) and what is the route?  Is there aircond for the pets? which is best Cargo or accompagned baggage?

To transport pets from South Africa, I found that the most helpful people are the ones from Fastpulse. Plus, I found them to be more reasonable than the others if you're sending your pets as cargo. I've been dealing with Desiree, I'm posting her details here in case someone is interested.

This is a very good topic indeed, and I also suggest you post it on the animal forum. I transported my two 'desert' dogs out on Qatar Airways in the month of July about two years ago. You are certainly right, it is VERY hot, particularly out on the tarmac. There are a few points you need to consider:

1. Your dog's breed eg. short nosed breeds like pugs etc find it difficult to breathe well, or dogs with long fur or those not very suited to hot climates will suffer more.

2. Certain types of Aircraft do not have dedicated temperature controlled environments in the cargo hold. If I remember correctly, the Airbus 319 is one such aircraft. So your dog should NOT travel unless you are sure that the aircraft won't be changed in Doha.

3. Time of your flight arrival / change and departure. If it's the middle of the night, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. If it's in the middle of the day.......hmmm it probably will be a problem.

QA as an airline is good. But the fact that they do not put restrictions on transporting animals in the peak of summer (when other reputable airline do) concerns me. Lufthansa is by far the best animal carrier, and they have strict restrictions, which is why I have always used them; except for the BAH-DOH segment which was not in the hottest part of the day.

Please go and read the section for transporting pets in the Pets and Animals group here. There are a few tips which may help. My other suggestion is for you to contact Qatar Pet Relocators, maybe they can help you.

My wife has a ticket to fly through Qatar, on Qatar Air, in August, to India. Qatar Air has no hot month embargo for flying pets. Air France and Delta, for example, won't take your dogs in the cargo hold from May 15th through September 15th.

I know how very, very HOT it can get in Qatar, so I'm concerned about possible harm that could occur to the dogs while changing planes in Doha. Sitting out on a tarmac could kill a dog in the heat there. Can anyone tell me how the airline treats dogs? Do they quickly move them off the plane into an air conditioned building? Thanks for any advice. If we can't bring them on this flight, we will have to wait until after September 15th and take a different airline.

I don't know the ins and outs since I worked with Qatar Pet Relocators to take care of all the paperwork here in Qatar. I'm sure this topic comes up again and again.

I recommend that you contact Qatar Pet Relocators (http://www.qatarpetrelocators.com), The Doha Vets (www.dohavets.com), and/or Qatar's Veterinary Hospital (www.qatarvets.name.qa).

Another thing I want you to think about is the quality of life they'll have here in Qatar. We're lucky that we live in a villa that has a relatively large backyard with grass. Many new housing areas have a very small backyard, if at all. There are places where you can go (ex. Wakrah beach) but you'd have to drive there.

Getting out to move here is a huge step. Good luck with everything.

My husband is thinking about getting out of the military and moving to qatar. we have two dogs, a rottweiler and a pitt bull/english bulldog mix. they are both very sweet dogs...both are only a year old. i saw that i would have to get permission from the ministry of interior...how do i got about getting the application and what does it involve?? Please help...there is no way i'm moving there if i can't bring them with me.

I don't know all the ins and outs but I heard that exceptions can be made for those dogs that are on the banned breed list. Since your dog is a mixed-breed, I'd think that you'd have an easier time finding a work around...

I have a very docile,very quite black lab who has some rottweiller in him, his bob-tail is what gives him away. does anyone know the regulations on mixed breeds. cause i really can't leave my baby boy behind.

My husband and I may be relocating to Qatar (if we get offered the job!) and HAVE to bring our Labrador. It's good to know there are like minded pet addicts in Qatar. We have been living in Country NSW in Australia and they don't understand why our dog is indoors, let alone allowed to sleep on the bed - that's because their dogs are working dogs and are all outside pets. His royal labrador highness Sanjai just thinks they're rather ruff and common!!!!

Anyway, it's good to know this info as and when we come to relocated. Keep up the dialogue.

Maybe already suggested but there are many good pet stores online. If there are are a large number of people wanting better quality / more choice can we not get together to cut the cost of shipping?

It will be great to keep him on food he is used to, and also with the better quality foods, digestion is about 80%, which makes the "stool" smaller and less in quantity...... This will be great for me, as a working girl, to walk him more than 3 times a day will be a big problem.....

My lurcher arrived from the UK on a Qatar Airways flight last week. He was not stressed at all, just tired. We used Doha Vets at this end to "meet and greet" the flight. Ths is an invaluable service, they go to the airport, clear the dog with customs and, if you want them to, deliver your dog. It costs about QR1200. Personally, I think that this could have been difficult to do on my own as I can't speak arabic and am not used to the ways here as I haven't been here long and have never lived abroad before. Also, the guy who met us really hurried the process along. As for the heat, he has been fine, drinking more water and tiring more quickly but on the whole seems happy. I am so glad that I decided to bring him now.

I have just sent my two cats to boston and it cost 4000qr the other half wanted them sent as cargo as someone will be there to pick them up at the other end this is with BA! Just to let people know also i will update on how it goes!!!

Just a word of advice, Frontline works on some and not others...prolonged use of anything often causes problems with effectiveness. Check with your vets, there are alternatives available.

The ticks here can be a problem but with regular preventative treatments are very managable. Although not nice the ticks here do not carry the diseases known in other countries. I will get the details from the vet to provide more information but please do not panic if your animal picks up ticks, in my experience here I have never had an animal become sick, let alone die from this strain of ticks.

Ok I asked my hubby about the food. The army orders for his company. BUT from what I have heard when the expiration date is up, they have to trash it. As you know, just because the date has passed, the food is not bad. I can see if he can bring it home rather than trash it. It's such a waste when the food is perfectly fine. I can only imagine what the shipping would be on those big bags.

Finally getting my residency permit means I can start making arrangements to bring my boy from South Africa.... I am so excited.....

I met up with Britgirl and her hubby yesterday as they have enlisted my services in training there two cute babies.... Thunder and Lightening.... names are very apt......

I was shocked when she told me about the ticks the dogs pick up here..... Who would have thought ticks would survive in the sand.... Fleas maybe.... but ticks... they are nomally a grass insect.....apparently, Frontline is not working to well here.... so beware about that..... Bulahri (the tick born disease)is a "killer".

I was hoping too see Hill's Vet also... as at home Anex is on something similar, but produced in S A..... MC, would you please find out if it would be available to us mere mortals not on the airbase......lol...... I do like Pedigree also, but not so keen on the tinned stuff.... prefer chunks...... Anex goes through about 20kgs a month.... so would buy big bags at a time.....

For pet shampoo's and other supplies try Shoprite by the airport (quite a challenge to get to it right now with the roadworks) they have a surprisingly good stock of products and lots of dry dog foods.

Dog travel crates are quite hard to obtain here so I would urge you to get some disinfectant and a hose, clean it up and store it somewhere safe.

I was told that pugs are banned due to their respitory problems. With a the dust here, they may be a liability. Not sure how true that is but it makes sense. They're certainly not violent.

JJMB, my husband is a bomb dog handler here and they use Hills Science diet as well. I know get it in the huge bags. Ill ask him if they get it out in town from a vet or something or if they order it online.

I have seen dogs such as Mastiffs, Great Danes, Dobermans, etc. here so I'm guessing they have been smuggled in. I know some people lie about the breed to get them in the country. I know that alot of the large breeds here are used in fighting. Its sad.

We've been here in Doha a little more than a week and I wanted to provide an update to my previous posting. My dog arrived safe and sound and I'm grateful for the service provided by QPR (perhaps I should be their spokesperson!).

1. Do not leave your dog's leash with the crate if you want to get it back! When I was checking him in at the Cargo office, I left the leash with the dog and it was taped to his crate. It was never seen again!

2. Bring extra supply of pet food with you, along with pet shampoo/conditioner, etc! So far I've been to Carrefour, Lulu, the Mall supepermarket, and the Center. I knew that pet supplies will be limited but I didn't think how small it would be. I heard that the Landmark plaza mall stocks quite a bit so I'll have to check that out.

Buddy was quite dirty from soiling his crate en route to Doha and romping with other dogs at QPR kennel. He needed a bath so deseperately that I used my own shampoo and conditioner. Bring some with you.

My dog's been on Hill's Science Diet and I'd heard that it's available through a vet's office. But upon arrival, I was told that Science Diet contains pork byproduct (although not listed as one of the ingredients) so probably will not be available. So far, I found Iams, Alpo and Purina--mostly canned.

3. Tick medication. From speaking with a vet here in Qatar there are certain locations in Doha that harbor ticks. My dog's been on Frontline ever since he's been a puppy and when I picked him up, I found a couple of ticks on him (round and black rather than flat and red). Bring extra Frontline medicine if you're not sure.

4. Do not use a nice crate liner for transport. It will mostly likely get soiled and you may not want to use it again.

5. Think about your dog when picking out a place to live. Our current place has no grass whatsoever. It's a very small compound villa (8 units total) and the gate's always open. There's construction right aside and because there's a small shopping center, there's always a quite a bit of traffic. The place we're moving to will have an enclosed backyard with a small strip of grass. I can't wait to walk him around the compound or play with him in the back yard.

6. QPR doesn't accept credit card. Bring cash!

We plan on bringing our saint bernard too, that is great to hear that the heat is not overwhelming for him.

Large breeds seem to cope OK, I have a St Bernard and he is managing fine, loves the air conditioning and stays indoors quite a bit, especially July/August. He loves his run on the beach and this time of year is perfect weather!!! Most dogs adapt to this climate.

Regarding the banned breeds, the list has been supplied already but you can get special permission from the Ministry of Interior for these dogs. The application is quite a long process but is worth it if you really want to bring your dog with you and it's on the banned list.

How did a Pug make it on the list?

We have very the same experience. Qatarpetrelocators were extremely helpful and worked perfect even on short notice (3 days prior to our two cats arrival).

As the boys really don't like traveling we were told to go for cargo rather then accompanied baggage. And for arranging the cargo we rather hired the company from the list of IPATA members in our country (Czech Republic) to make sure they will plan the route to the best for our cats. Hard to judge if it worked but the cats traveled from Prague to Frankfurt (staying there for more than 16 hours) and later to Doha and both came in excellent condition. Even their hiding under the bed after traveling long distances in the crates was much shorter than the couple of hours journey by car :)))

Qatar Pet Relocators is awesome and very helpful. As far as airlines go we have used KLM. KLM is very good with animals and is the preferred airline for many animal orginizations like world class equine and pet shows.

In our experience if you can by-pass the UK all together for stop overs it is best. Amsterdam and Frankfurt have connecting flights to Doha and also have pet hotels with vets on site. They ensure your pet gets some quiet time, relief walks and examined before take off again.

Let us know when you get here, and how everything worked out. My husband and I brought our dog in May and she arrived totally unstressed and happy, we thought she would be a nervous wreck for a few weeks, but was just fine.

KLM and Lufthansa are the best airlines for pet travel. And they allow your pet as accompanied baggage.
