US Taxes on US expatriates

Is it true that you must include base salary + school fees + housing and if that is above 86K then you have to Pay Uncle Sam on the high bracket tax???

This is ridiculous because it erases the savings and defeats the purpose!

No wonder Europeans have huge advantage in getting jobs in the Gulf

When our tax situation became too complicated for us to figure out, we went to an H&R Block and were assigned an attorney who works for them specializing in laws for people overseas, have used him ever since.  At the end of the process, we always purchase the guarantee offered by the company, so that if an error is made and more money is owed, they will pay up to a certain amount, which for us would definitely cover it - we're not with an oil company getting paid loads.

Just curious - how would one assign a financial value on these "benefits" which are so incredibly expensive here but not worth that amount anywhere else?  Housing is a prime example.  The same villa behind us rents out for far less, the ones across the street for far more, depending on when the contract was signed.  All are rented by same employer for people getting same benefits. How does that work?

What is the housing allowance for Qatar you can deduct on top of the 85K?

Sorry for the delay, been busy on the job offer.  Yes I am DA CIV, are you?  Im just amazed to the info that my HR is telling me.  I dont understand why they say that the step for GS is not negotiable because of some regulation when all my other friends with the same job  were able to negotiate the step.  Man, its frustrating.

I dont know any school to put my kids in yet, just two ages 4 and 9.  Do you have any recommendation by Doha helennan?  Thank you.

You need to check tax code. It is different for each country that a US citizen lives in. Yes the salary is tax free up to $85,000, but they give you different allowances for housing depending on where you are.

Perhaps we have a creative tax person in the US, but he maintains that since we cannot send our children to a local public school (they don't speak the language), then the American school tuition is tax free.  If we lived stateside, we could send them to a public school for free, but as that's not the case here, then the American School of Doha is considered a substitute.  Obviously, we're going with that....

Javi and Helenann

I just moved here a few months ago and am teaching at one of the schools here.  You need to apply/get on waiting list now.  (I have friends whose children are still on waiting list from last year!)  You can go online to most school's websites and see what is needed.  Call or email them to let them know you want to enroll your children.  Good luck!

April 15 is the deadline for filing your US taxes.

The web site that would answer all your questions about US Taxes is:

http://www.irs.gov/

My own experience:

If you wish to do your taxes with some kind of legal representation, I'll recommend you that you hire a Tax lawyer, they got all the answer for your questions about taxes. If you need a tax lawyer for your filling, just ask me. I'll give some reliable information.

I'll advise you, not to do your Taxes with the local companies, which plague

the malls of the US.

Example of them is: *HR BLOCK*. They will file only the 1040 easy short form.

If you need to claim and itemized your expenses or any kind of business

loss, against your tax bracket, then you hire a Tax lawyer to file your 1040

long form.  There is additional paper work for those tax breaks.

I don’t agree with the current tax

system, but there is nothing we could do about it. If you don’t file your tax

forms they will prosecute you legally.

Any US Citizen living and

working outside the US

has to file taxes regardless of the currency you are getting paid.

Talk to me about the Canadian Tax code, how does it work?

Correct if you are UK or Canadian or Any Country Citizen except USA. USA is the ONLY and I repeat ONLY country on earth which taxes its citizens and greencard holders whereever they go even after they die based on their citizenship or permanent residency in USA!!!!! Explain that rationally if you can Red_Pope!!!!

Thank you flingwing.  Red_Pope could not have any valid argument to explain the stealing blind of hard-earned money by good honest US Citizens so he points to my nationality as Canadian and tells me to shut up.  Typical dumb response from a dumb beaurocrat.

Red_Pope

Your comments are so dumb. You have no right to lecture me on how great your country is and quote your state dept. You have no right to shut me up because I am Canadian.

I was making a very valid comment that has already been made by many US Senators and Congressmen who are upset about the robbing and stealing hard-earned money from American expats giving a huge advantage to people like me.

Next time you either make a comment on the statement or just shut up.

Don't make it sound like a "love it or leave it" choice. I've probably got more time standing in the mess hall line than you've got on this earth! And yes, the USA remains a major transparent democracy, and something of a vibrant and diverse country. Yet the tax codes are berserk.

Thousands of pages of written rubbish that only politicians could cobble together for their own personal benefit. Benefits like pay rises when the rest of the country has been suffering. How many raises have those dogs had in the past 5-10 years? And all that while lots of rich people in the highest tax brackets pay little or no tax.

The only reason those dumb-witted politicians in Washington - henceforth referred to in this post as "BS" for "bloodsuckers" - increased the taxes on expatriates is because we're a non-vital voting block. Yet it's us who work our rear ends off day and night "on freedom's frontier", promoting U.S. products and services and enabling people in other countries to come to know Americans - other than those on TV.

So don't paint such a simple-minded picture. And as long as you are a government employee then, as your boss, I'll have you start thinking about complex matters more thoroughly, especially if you're going to state them in a public forum.

And if you really are Dept. of State, it's spelled U.S. State Department - all initial caps.

Have a nice day.

Yes, we have put our kids on the waiting lists at a few schools.  You just need to have all necessary paperwork for each school.  You also have to pay the application fee. I'm going for a visit April 17-28.  I am looking forward to seeing some schools. Do you have specific schools in mind?  We have three.  (9, 6, and 4)  DA Civ?

So are you excited for June?  I am due in Qatar in maybe 2 months as well.  By the way, do you know by any chance if we can sign up now for the waiting lists on the kids school even while in the states?

By the way, are you guys going to be working as a DA Civ Miss Helennan.

such is life!  I'm from the US, and that's just the way the ball bounces. We all have a choice as to where we want to live.  I don't like the situation either.  Is what it is!!!

First, a US friend of mine is asking me about this so I am helping a friend

2nd of all US is the ONLY country in the world that taxes based on passport not residency.  For the good of US Citizens and to make them more competitive they need to change that.  Otherwise,  Europeans take all the jobs due to tax disadvantage of Americans.

Why would you care about it?

You are Canadian!

Apparently you are asking everyone with a negative Tone.

It seems that you are planning to start

an argument with no significance to your own Canadian National Tax Code.

People look at the US and the electoral process here and are reminded that this is a major transparent democracy, a vibrant and diverse country.
